Racehorse Celebre d’Allen Dies Following Grand National
Tragedy has struck the world of horse racing as Celebre d’Allen, the 13-year-old gelding who collapsed after competing in Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree, has died. The news of his passing came on Tuesday after his condition unexpectedly worsened overnight. Trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, Celebre d’Allen, ridden by Micheál Nolan at odds of 125-1, was pulled up after the final jump and subsequently collapsed on the Aintree racecourse.
Initial Treatment and Transfer
Following his collapse, veterinary personnel provided immediate care to Celebre d’Allen. He was then able to walk into the horse ambulance and was transported to the stables for further evaluation. In a separate incident during the race, jockey Micheál Nolan received a 10-day suspension for continuing to ride after the second-to-last fence when it was deemed his chances of winning were gone.
Brief Improvement Followed by Setback
Johnson White initially reported on Sunday that the veteran horse was showing positive signs of recovery after staying overnight at Aintree. He was then moved to a nearby livery stable to continue his recuperation.
Trainer’s Statement on Celebre d’Allen’s Death
However, the situation took a turn for the worse. On Tuesday, a heartbroken White stated, “He received the utmost care possible, but unfortunately his condition declined overnight and he sadly passed away. Everyone at the yard is devastated by this news. It is incredibly somber here this morning, as you can imagine.”
Yard Expresses Grief
In a statement released on social media platform X, the training yard shared their sorrow: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Celebre d’Allen. He received exemplary treatment from the veterinary teams and had shown signs of improvement. However, his condition dramatically deteriorated last night and tragically, he could not be saved. He was a truly wonderful horse, and he will be deeply missed by us all.”

Animal Rights Groups Voice Concerns
Following Broadway Boy’s fall and Celebre d’Allen’s collapse during Saturday’s race, animal rights organizations had already voiced criticism. Nina Copleston-Hawkens of Animal Aid stated on Tuesday that Celebre d’Allen’s death was “utterly heartbreaking,” adding, “To permit a horse of his age to compete in the most demanding steeplechase in the country is unacceptable.”
