GITAI Establishes U.S. Defense Subsidiary to Pursue Government Contracts

TAMPA, Fla. — Space robotics firm GITAI has announced the formation of a defense-oriented subsidiary at its Torrance, California headquarters. This strategic move, revealed on April 8, will enable the company to pursue prime contractor roles in procurements from the U.S. government. The newly established entity underscores GITAI’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the national security space sector.

Strategic Move for U.S. Government Projects

GITAI, which specializes in designing and manufacturing robotic arms, satellites, and rovers, already operates within the United States through GITAI USA. Relocating its primary base of operations from Japan in 2023, GITAI USA has previously secured agreements with government bodies like DARPA. However, a significant portion of GITAI USA’s ownership remains with Japanese individuals and investment firms.

Addressing Ownership Requirements for Prime Contracts

The establishment of GITAI Defense and Space is a direct response to requirements from the Department of Defense and NASA. These agencies typically mandate that prime contractors must be majority-owned or controlled by U.S. citizens or permanent residents. To meet these stipulations, the defense subsidiary has been structured utilizing a U.S.-based voting trust.

GITAI Defense and Space Structure and Focus

GITAI Defense and Space was officially created in March. The ownership structure is delineated as 51% held by the U.S. trust company and 49% by GITAI USA. This configuration is specifically designed to allow the new subsidiary to concentrate on securing prime contracts for critical national security missions within the space domain.

Executive Perspective on Defense Expansion

Sho Nakanose, founder and CEO of GITAI, communicated via email his perspective on this strategic development. “We are carefully watching the amplified emphasis on space defense capabilities under the current U.S. administration,” Nakanose stated. “Our primary objective is to contribute to missions centered around low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations and on-orbit servicing. We intend to leverage our internally developed satellites and robotic arm-equipped spacecraft to achieve this.”

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Advancements in Satellite Technology

GITAI announced in January the successful demonstration of its inaugural internally developed satellite in LEO. This milestone signifies substantive progress toward creating more sophisticated spacecraft intended for in-space servicing and construction applications. The 20-kilogram, 16U-class satellite, launched by SpaceX in December, successfully achieved all planned testing goals. This included capturing and transmitting both image and video data.

Expanding Satellite Portfolio

Looking ahead, Nakanose indicated that GITAI will broaden its product offerings to include 50-kilogram and 200-kilogram satellite platforms. This expansion is aimed at fulfilling the increasing requirements for satellite constellation deployments in LEO and beyond.

Beyond Defense: Commercial and Lunar Initiatives

In addition to its defense-oriented ventures, GITAI is actively involved in the advancement of robotic servicing technologies intended for in-orbit maintenance and assembly operations for commercial enterprises. The company is also participating in lunar exploration activities, having recently finalized a conceptual study for a robotic arm designed for Japan’s proposed crewed lunar rover program.
