Elton John Affirms Glastonbury Finale as Touring Peak
Music legend Sir Elton John has stated that he could not surpass his memorable 2023 Glastonbury show, explaining his decision to retire from extensive tours. After recently returning to the stage for a special, intimate performance at London’s Palladium Theatre with Brandi Carlisle, the acclaimed 78-year-old performer and father of two has definitively ruled out future concert tours under his own name. While initially stating in 2018 that his retirement was not due to health concerns, he now suggests that embarking on another tour would be overwhelmingly taxing.
Glastonbury Performance Unmatched
“To embark on another Elton John tour set, it would simply be too much. We recently traveled to New Orleans to film Spinal Tap 2, and upon arriving at a large arena, I remarked to David, ‘You know, this is overwhelming.’ I realized I could not deliver a superior show to Glastonbury 2023, so what would be the purpose? One must recognize when it is time to conclude,” he admitted in a Times interview. The celebrated five-time Grammy Award recipient initially announced his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2018, signaling his departure from touring.
Family Priorities and Farewell Tour
At the time of the 2018 announcement, John explained that his “priorities have shifted,” noting that his sons with husband David Furnish, Elijah and Zachary, had profoundly altered their family life.
“In 2015, considering school schedules, I realized I didn’t want to miss significant portions of their lives… My life has evolved, my priorities have changed, and my family is now my central focus.”
He described the extensive tour as an opportunity “to express gratitude to fans worldwide and then to bid farewell. This does not imply an end to my creative endeavors. I have enjoyed a remarkable journey, and I intend to conclude with a memorable flourish.”

Tour Adjustments and Glastonbury Highlight
However, Sir Elton’s plans experienced adjustments when his farewell tour faced postponements due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled to conclude in 2021, it extended into 2023. It became an epic undertaking, encompassing over 300 performances and attracting more than 6 million attendees globally. His final UK performance was headlining the Glastonbury Festival, an event he now asserts he cannot top.
Emotional Glastonbury Address
During the Glastonbury headline performance, he emotionally confessed that he “never imagined” he would perform at Glastonbury and suggested it was potentially his “final performance ever in England and Great Britain”.
Opening and Sentiments
Opening his Glastonbury set with his 1975 hit, Pinball Wizard, he addressed the massive crowd: “Oh well, I never anticipated playing at Glastonbury, yet here I am.”
“This evening is particularly special and emotionally charged, as it might be my last ever performance in England and Great Britain. Therefore, I must deliver a strong performance and thoroughly entertain you, given your extended wait.”
Guest Appearances and Gratitude
Throughout the Glastonbury performance, Sir Elton welcomed several special guests for duets, including Brandon Flowers, the frontman of The Killers.
The following day, John expressed his appreciation on Instagram, writing: “Thank you, Glastonbury! The energy last night was unparalleled, and I am deeply grateful to the audience and viewers at home for their immense love and support. You will remain in my heart and soul eternally. UK, what a farewell. I love you,” further solidifying his commitment to retirement from touring.
