Horse Racing Tragedy: Celebre D’Allen Dies Following Grand National Fall
In a somber turn of events for the horse racing community, trainers have announced the passing of Celebre D’Allen, just days after the equine sustained injuries during a fall at the prestigious Grand National steeplechase. The unfortunate incident occurred at Aintree, where Celebre D’Allen was one of two horses to collapse during the renowned race.
Celebre D’Allen’s Condition Deteriorates After Race
During the Aintree Grand National, jockey Micheal Nolan pulled up Celebre D’Allen. Nolan subsequently received a 10-day ban for continuing to ride the 13-year-old gelding when it appeared visibly exhausted. The horse subsequently collapsed on the course, requiring immediate veterinary intervention. Although Celebre D’Allen initially walked into a horsebox after receiving attention, his condition took a turn for the worse on Monday evening, ultimately leading to his demise.
Trainers Express Deep Sadness
Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, the trainers of Celebre D’Allen, conveyed their profound sorrow, stating: “We are heartbroken to announce the death of Celebre D’Allen. He received the utmost care from the veterinary professionals and initially showed signs of improvement. Regrettably, his condition declined sharply overnight and he could not be saved. He was a truly special horse, and we will all miss him immensely.”
Speaking to the PA news agency, White further elaborated: “He received the best possible treatment, but sadly his condition deteriorated overnight, and he passed away. Everyone at the yard is devastated. It is a very somber atmosphere here this morning, as you can imagine.”
Initial Optimism Followed by Setback
Following the Grand National, reports indicated that Celebre D’Allen was suffering from heatstroke and was kept at Aintree for monitoring overnight. His trainers initially expressed optimism regarding his recovery.

Sunday Update: Hopeful Signs
On Sunday, co-trainer White offered an encouraging update: “He remained at Aintree, and this morning I viewed videos showing him appearing much brighter and grazing on grass. Veterinarians have examined him, and plans were in place to move him to a nearby livery yard later today. This was positive news, indicating he was progressing well.”
White added regarding the initial assessment: “In the immediate aftermath, I didn’t have detailed discussions with the vets about the precise cause, but it was likely a combination of heat and other factors. The crucial aspect was that he seemed to be recovering. We were greatly relieved that it appeared he would be alright.”
Jockey Receives Suspension
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) confirmed that jockey Micheal Nolan was suspended for 10 days for persisting to ride Celebre D’Allen when the horse was visibly struggling. The stewards’ report detailed: “An inquiry was conducted to assess whether Micheal Nolan, rider of CELEBRE D’ALLEN (FR), continued racing when the horse seemed unable to exert further effort and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence. Interviews were conducted with the rider and the Veterinary Officer, and recordings of the incident were reviewed. Consequently, the rider was suspended for 10 days.”
Broadway Boy’s Fall
In a separate incident during the same race, Broadway Boy also fell at the 25th hurdle, suffering a heavy fall and tumbling onto his face. Similar to Celebre D’Allen, Broadway Boy received extended on-course veterinary care after the race before being transported in a horse ambulance.
