Douglas Henshall Embarks on New Role in Historical Drama ‘Angh’

Douglas Henshall, widely recognized for his compelling portrayal in the acclaimed series Shetland, has secured a prominent role in “Angh,” a significant historical drama set against the evocative backdrop of 1960s Nagaland. This poignant narrative explores a relatively unknown chapter in the history of this region.

Independent Film to Illuminate Nagaland’s Past

This independent film, marking the directorial debut for Theja Rio, unfolds in the 1960s Nagaland region of Eastern India. It aims to cast light upon a largely unexplored period within the area’s rich heritage.

According to reports, Douglas Henshall, celebrated for his portrayal of DI Jimmy Perez in the popular BBC crime drama, is slated to play a pivotal character in this forthcoming movie.

Synopsis of ‘Angh’

The official synopsis outlines the film’s premise:

“Set in 1960s Nagaland, a proud Konyak chief grapples with the challenge of safeguarding his fading traditions when an American missionary arrives with promises of aid that inadvertently threaten his people’s very identity.”

Authenticity Through Local Talent and 16mm Film

The film distinguishes itself by featuring a cast predominantly composed of local actors, many of whom are making their on-screen debut. Further enhancing its visual authenticity, “Angh” is being filmed entirely on 16mm film, a technique chosen to impart a textured and period-appropriate aesthetic to the storytelling.

Upon completion of production, “Angh” is anticipated to premiere at various international film festivals. However, a specific public release date is yet to be confirmed.

We are confident that it will be a truly meaningful contribution to the cinematic landscape.”

Producer Highlights Personal Significance

She further commented on the collaborative spirit of the production, “Bringing together local talent, a dynamic international crew, and the artistic choice of shooting on 16mm has been a rare and profoundly special experience. The addition of Douglas Henshall to our team significantly strengthens our vision, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this film with audiences around the globe.”

Henshall’s Departure from ‘Shetland’

Douglas Henshall previously concluded his celebrated role in Shetland in 2022, after an impressive seven seasons portraying DI Jimmy Perez.

‘Shetland’ Continues to Thrive

Despite Henshall’s departure, the popular detective drama “Shetland” continues to flourish. Its ninth season premiered on BBC One in December 2024, maintaining its strong viewership and critical acclaim.

Ashley Jensen, who portrays DI Ruth Calder, is set to return for the tenth season later this year, with filming having commenced in Scotland earlier this month.
