He cited the inclusion of a larger LCD screen, enhanced internal hardware, redesigned Joy-Con controllers prioritizing durability, the integrated GameChat social platform, among other advancements. Bowser emphasized the intention to create a device that is “accessible” and perceived by consumers as a valuable component of their broader entertainment options, with a considerable lifespan. He affirmed that “all of these considerations factored into the ultimate price.”

The pricing strategy for the Nintendo Switch 2 positions it as a premium offering within Nintendo’s current product range. Nintendo intends to continue marketing all three existing Nintendo Switch models – the standard version, the OLED iteration, and the Switch Lite – for the foreseeable future, even after the new console’s release. When questioned about whether the pricing of existing Switch models, with a maximum price of $349.99, influenced the $449.99 price of the Nintendo Switch 2, Bowser’s response was ambiguous. “You have to consider pricing relative to the Switch given its continued availability,” he acknowledged. “However, the pricing strategy was primarily dictated by the features and overall gaming experience offered by this specific device, rather than in direct comparison to the original Switch.”

This approach also clarifies why Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour – a game designed to educate players about the Nintendo Switch 2 and showcase its core capabilities – is a standalone paid title rather than a complimentary pack-in, akin to Wii Sports or Astro’s Playroom. Bowser elaborated, “Throughout the development of this game, a significant depth of mini-game experiences has been incorporated. They possess considerable depth and replayability. Consequently, upon evaluating the richness of the gameplay and opportunities, we determined that $9.99 represented a reasonable price point.”
