Mother and Children Detained by Immigration Authorities in Upstate New York Village Released
A mother and her children, detained by immigration authorities approximately two weeks prior in Sackets Harbor, New York, were released on Monday. The upstate New York village is notably where Tom Homan, former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), resides. Their detention had sparked widespread concern and calls for their release.
School Superintendent Leads Release Efforts
Jennifer Gaffney, the superintendent of the Sackets Harbor Central School District, where the children are enrolled as students, spearheaded efforts to secure the family’s release. They had been detained on March 27th and subsequently transferred to the Karnes County Residential Center in Texas.
“After eleven days filled with uncertainty, our students and their mother are returning to their home,” Gaffney announced in a statement on Monday. “We remain dedicated to providing the necessary support, understanding, and sensitivity to all students and staff as we navigate the healing process following this traumatic experience.”
Homeland Security Confirms Family’s Return
A senior official within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) corroborated to news outlets that the family was en route back to their Sackets Harbor residence.
Governor Hochul Discusses Release with Former ICE Official
New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement on Monday afternoon, revealing that she had spoken with Tom Homan. According to Hochul, Homan confirmed that the family was “currently on their way back” to Sackets Harbor in Jefferson County.
“I cannot fathom the trauma experienced by these children and their mother, and I pray for their healing upon their return home,” Governor Hochul stated.
Community Expresses Relief
Corey DeCillis, chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Committee, who organized a demonstration on Saturday advocating for the family’s release, conveyed to news outlets his feeling of elation upon hearing of their release.
Details of the Initial Operation
Search Warrant and Arrests
According to the senior DHS official, agents from Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol were executing a criminal search warrant at Old McDonald’s Farm in Sackets Harbor on March 27th. This action was linked to an ongoing federal investigation concerning the alleged possession and distribution of child sexual abuse materials.
The DHS official stated that authorities apprehended seven individuals at the farm who were determined to be undocumented, including the mother and her three children. The official did not elaborate on the specific circumstances of these encounters.
“Homeland Security Investigations immediately initiated an investigation to ascertain that these children were not subjected to sexual exploitation,” the official added.
Concerns Raised Over Immigration Enforcement Tactics
Immigrant rights advocates, school officials, and Governor Hochul voiced strong objections. They questioned the rationale behind arresting the family and “disappearing them” from their community as a means of ensuring the children’s safety.
Murad Awawdeh, president and chief executive officer of the New York Immigration Coalition, described the events experienced by the Sackets Harbor family as “a very grueling and horrifying experience” in a news interview on Monday.
School Principal’s Open Letter
In a public letter issued the previous week, Jaime Cook, principal of Sackets Harbor Central School, emphasized that the family “resided in a house situated on the same road as a residence for which ICE possessed a warrant. The fact that ICE conducted door-to-door inquiries is incomprehensible.”
“The notion that our students were handcuffed and placed in the same vehicle as the suspected criminal from the vicinity is unconscionable,” Cook’s letter further stated.
Governor Hochul reiterated on Tuesday that she could “not identify any public safety justification for ICE agents to remove an innocent family, including a third-grade child, from their Sackets Harbor home.”
Principal Cook clarified that the children are in the third, 10th, and 11th grades and have been students at the school for three years.
The detention of the mother and her three children occurred during an operation by immigration authorities at Old McDonald’s Farm, where they were searching for a South African immigrant. This individual has since been charged with distribution of child pornography.
The arrest of the South African immigrant was part of an “enhanced targeted operation” conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement across western, central, and northern New York from March 24th to 28th.
Tom Homan had previously defended the operation and the family’s arrest in a media interview, stating, “ICE is operating entirely within protocol. Once the investigation progresses to a point where this family is no longer pertinent, a determination regarding their release will be made.”
Community Support and Path Forward
Principal Cook highlighted the family’s long-standing integration within the Sackets Harbor community, noting their 15 years of work at the farm. She emphasized that the mother and children had been diligently “doing everything correctly” in their pursuit of legal residency in the U.S., including attending court hearings and presenting themselves to immigration judges.
Awawdeh expressed hope that the family can effectively resume their efforts to achieve legal status.
As the community anticipates the family’s return, Awawdeh remarked that their case “serves as a testament to the significant impact of community support in securing the release of neighbors in similar situations.”
