‘Lack of class’: Guardiola hits out at United fans’ chant about Foden’s mother

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticized a segment of Manchester United supporters for directing abusive chants towards Phil Foden during Sunday’s Manchester derby. Guardiola specifically addressed the disrespectful nature of the fan abuse, which targeted Foden’s mother in the goalless Premier League match at Old Trafford.

The offensive remarks were aimed at the City winger in the first half as his team played towards the Stretford End of Old Trafford. Guardiola was subsequently questioned about the incident.

Guardiola Condemns Fan Behavior

“[It was a] lack of class,” the Manchester City boss stated. “But it’s not Manchester United as a club, it’s the individuals [supporters], you know? We, in football – managers, club owners, and especially players – are under intense scrutiny. Frankly, I cannot comprehend the mentality of those who would involve Phil’s mother in their insults. It demonstrates a lack of integrity and class, and those individuals should feel ashamed.”

Clubs React to Abusive Chants

Sources indicate that Manchester City expressed shock and dismay at the abusive chants and the scale of participation among the fans. Manchester United has reportedly stated their condemnation of all forms of abusive chanting directed at players.

Match Outcome and Champions League Pursuit

The goalless draw positioned City in fifth place with 52 points, trailing Chelsea in fourth by a single point with seven fixtures remaining in the Premier League season. Regarding the team’s pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot, Guardiola commented: “Seven matches remaining, Crystal Palace next, we must strive for victory in each. Ideally, we would have a greater points advantage, but we accept the current situation. Old Trafford is always a challenging venue. We competed and were present in the game. The players gave their utmost. We need to exhibit greater attacking fluidity.”

Future Focus and Match Analysis

“My immediate focus isn’t next season; it’s on player recovery and our upcoming matches against Crystal Palace, Everton, Aston Villa, and the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest,” Guardiola added.

“A win would have been preferable, but Old Trafford is a notoriously difficult ground, and Manchester United are a team in transition. Our aim was to establish a solid build-up play and control possession, and our defense performed admirably. They pose a threat when we concede possession in vulnerable areas.”

Manchester United Manager on Team Development

Manchester United currently sits 13th in the league standings. When questioned about the challenges of revitalizing the club’s performance and playing style, Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, stated: “We are aiming to be competitive promptly, but achieving true dominance against top-tier opponents will require considerable time. We need to employ diverse strategies. In possession-based football, City is arguably the best globally. Comparing this match to the Arsenal game, we showed improvements in certain aspects today. We are progressing. City has been playing this style for an extended period.”

Urgency for Improvement and Fan Protest

“I am in a hurry as we are experiencing significant difficulties. Everyone associated with the club is feeling the impact of these changes, and we need to demonstrate substantial improvements in the coming year, and quickly,” Amorim emphasized.

Following the final whistle, a sit-in protest, organized by the ‘1958’ group to voice opposition against the Glazer family’s ownership, was attended by approximately two hundred Manchester United supporters.
