Pioneering Gang of Four Bassist Dave Allen Dies at 69

Dave Allen, the bassist renowned for his work with the seminal post-punk band Gang of Four, has died at the age of 69. Former band members Jon King and Hugo Burnham shared the news of the influential musician’s passing with fans, stating that Allen died on Saturday, April 5.

Bandmates Share Heartfelt Tribute

In a message posted on Instagram, King and Burnham wrote: β€œIt is with heavy hearts, yet filled with love, that we announce the death of Dave Allen, our cherished musical comrade, friend, and exceptionally talented musician, who passed away on Saturday morning. He was at home, surrounded by family. For several years, Dave bravely faced the challenges of early-onset mixed dementia, a deeply painful period for his wife Paddy, his children, and close circle of friends. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them.”

The statement continued, “Jon and I [Hugo] recently visited Dave and spent a delightful afternoon with him and his family. We reminisced and laughed for hours, exchanging vibrant memories of joyous times shared together. Adventures, music careers, raising families, our intertwined lives spanning five decades. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have had the ‘Ace of Bass’ in our lives. We know Dave would have dearly wished to join us onstage again in Portland for our farewell US tour. Sadly, this was no longer possible.” They concluded with: “Farewell, dear friend.”

Allen’s Defining Role in Gang of Four

Allen became a member of Gang of Four in 1976, alongside guitarist Andy Gill, King, and Burnham. He succeeded original bassist Dave Wolfson, who performed in only a few early shows. Allen’s distinct and inventive bass playing became a hallmark of the band’s sound. Their 1979 debut album, Entertainment!, achieved critical acclaim and is widely recognized for its significant impact on subsequent bands such as Nirvana and REM.

Shriekback and Later Career

Dave Allen departed Gang of Four in 1981 and subsequently co-founded the band Shriekback with Barry Andrews.
