Comedian Jeff Ross Hospitalized After Allergic Reaction to Ice Cream
Over the weekend, comedian Jeff Ross, known as the “Roastmaster General,” experienced a sudden allergic reaction after consuming ice cream. The incident led to a hospital visit and photos of Ross with a noticeably swollen lip shared on social media.
Unexpected Reaction During Show Celebration
Ross recounted that the incident occurred in Mill Valley, California, following a performance of his one-man show, “Take a Banana for the Ride.” He and his band were celebrating at a local restaurant when the unexpected reaction took place.
“Afterwards, me and the band celebrated with some Burata ice cream at a restaurant down the street courtesy of the nice owner,” the 59-year-old entertainer detailed. “It was delicious. Seriously yummy. But my lips blew up and I spent the entire night in the ER.”
First-Time Allergic Episode
Ross noted the surprising nature of the event, stating, “It was my first allergic reaction ever. I guess that’s pretty remarkable considering I’m constantly shoving whatever food is in front of me into my face.”
Gratitude and Humor Amidst Medical Emergency
Expressing gratitude, Ross thanked the medical professionals at Marin Medical Health Center for their care, adding they “only roasting me lightly.” He jokingly reassured fans about his condition and upcoming performance.
“DESPITE LOOKING LIKE MICKEY ROURKE at the end of “The Wrestler”… I WILL BE TAKING A NAP AND BACK ON STAGE HERE IN MILL VALLEY NEAR SAN FRANCISCO AT 730pm TONIGHT,” he affirmed.
Celebrity Friends Offer Jests and Support
News of Ross’s predicament prompted reactions from celebrity friends, who responded with a mix of humorous comments and well wishes.
Joey Fatone of NSYNC playfully compared Ross’s appearance to the character Sloth from “The Goonies,” commenting, “Sloth love chunk… and I can always be your chunk ! Speedy recovery my brother.”
Fellow comedian Josh Wolf humorously remarked, “Didn’t even notice a difference.”
Kelly Rizzo, the widow of Bob Saget, conveyed a supportive message, writing, “Oh no! How dare burrata do that to you!?!? Hope you’re better already! Love you!”
Ross’s Comedy Style Unapologetic and Bold
Known for his unapologetic comedic style, Ross has previously discussed his approach to humor. Earlier this year, he told journalist Nicholas Ballasy, “People – they don’t want their comedy watered down, they want it potent, right to the stomach, and that’s what I try to do.” This came during The Creative Coalition’s event honoring military service organizations.
When asked about boundaries in comedy, Ross stated, “No. The kind of comedy I do has always been OK for my fans. Roast fans are the most dedicated. They don’t care about what any fake rules are.”
Past Roast Controversy
During a roast of Tom Brady the previous year, Ross’s humor made headlines when a joke directed at New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft appeared to draw a negative reaction from the NFL star.
Ross referenced Brady’s draft position and then joked about an incident involving Kraft.
“’I’m the best decision your organization has ever made,’” Ross quipped, adding “’Would you like a massage?’” This was a reference to Kraft’s involvement in a 2019 investigation concerning massage parlors.
Kraft, who pleaded not guilty and later issued a public apology in March 2019, was subsequently cleared of the solicitation charge in 2020.
Following the joke, Brady was reportedly heard telling Ross, “Don’t say that s— again,” a moment the comedian acknowledged with amusement.
