The cinematic adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft has delivered the strongest opening weekend performance for Vue cinemas since the release of Barbie in 2023, according to the chain’s chief executive.
Record-Breaking Debut for Minecraft Film
Tim Richards, head of the Vue cinema group, described A Minecraft Movie as having experienced a ‘phenomenal, record-breaking launch’.
‘We anticipate this impressive performance to continue throughout the week,’ he added.
Vue’s Success Without Specific Figures
Vue, which operates 223 cinemas across Europe, including 92 in the UK and Ireland, did not release specific figures regarding the film’s box office takings.
However, separate data from the film industry indicates that the movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has generated approximately £233 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
Entertainment Spending Remains Strong
Despite prevailing economic uncertainties, UK audiences are still spending robustly on entertainment. Recent cinema attendance has been bolstered by highly anticipated films such as Gladiator II and Wicked.
