A major food safety alert has been issued with an urgent recall of a popular Easter Egg product from Tony’s Chocolonely due to potential metal contamination. Consumers who have purchased the affected chocolate are advised to take immediate action.

Urgent Recall of Tony’s Chocolonely Easter Eggs Over Metal Concerns

Tony’s Chocolonely has initiated a recall of its milk chocolate and caramel sea salt 242g Easter Eggs. This precautionary measure is due to concerns that these specific Easter Eggs may contain metal fragments.

Affected Product Details

  • Product: Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate and Caramel Sea Salt 242g Easter Egg
  • Best Before Date: June 2025

Customers in possession of these Easter eggs are urged to refrain from consumption. They are advised to return the product to the store where it was purchased to receive a full refund.

Official Statement from Tony’s Chocolonely

In a released statement, Tony’s Chocolonely confirmed the recall: “If you have bought the products indicated above with the specified lot codes, please do not eat them. Instead, return the item to the store of purchase for a refund.”

The company reassured consumers that “The rest of the Easter range, including all smaller eggs and other products, are safe for consumption and are not impacted by this recall.”

Tony’s Chocolonely also stated, “The origin of this issue has been identified and rectified. We are working closely with retailers and food safety authorities to remove all impacted products from sale and distribution channels.”

Previous Recall for Potential Choking Hazard in Chocolate Bars

This recall follows shortly after a separate urgent nationwide recall by Tony’s Chocolonely concerning some of its chocolate bars. This earlier recall was prompted by the discovery of small stones, posing a potential choking hazard.

Certain flavors of Tony’s Chocolonely bars, distributed across numerous retail locations including Whole Foods, Target, Safeway, and CVS, were found to contain small stones.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously warned that ‘hard or sharp foreign objects in food may lead to traumatic injuries, such as lacerations and perforations in the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach, and intestines, as well as damage to teeth and gums.’

To date, twelve consumer complaints were reported to the Dutch chocolate manufacturer, which initiated the recall of the affected chocolate bar products.

Recalled Chocolate Bar Products

The two recalled products are:

  • Dark Almond Sea Salt (180g)
  • Everything Bars (180g) – containing milk chocolate with caramel, pretzel, almond nougat and sea salt

Specific Lot Codes and Best Before Dates for Chocolate Bar Recall

The safety recall specifically applies to bars with the following lot codes:

  • 163094
  • 162634
  • M162634
  • 4327
  • 4330
  • 4331
  • M4331

Consumers should avoid Dark Almond Sea Salt bars with best before dates of 28 February 2026 and 2 April 2026.

Everything Bars with best before dates between 22 and 26 November of the current year should also be returned.

Explanation for Chocolate Bar Contamination

A Tony’s Chocolonely spokesperson stated that the presence of small stones in the bars originated during ‘third-party almond harvesting and the almond processing process’.

The company, founded in Amsterdam in 2005, currently produces over eight chocolate flavors, including honey almond nugget and milk chocolate caramel sea salt.

Consumer Action Advised

Consumers who still possess any of the recalled products, either the Easter Eggs or the specific chocolate bars, are strongly advised against consuming them and should seek a refund from the place of purchase.
