Champions Cup Clash Between Toulouse and Sale Sharks Postponed After Paratrooper Incident
A bizarre incident resulted in the postponement of Sunday’s Champions Cup last-16 fixture between Toulouse and Sale Sharks. The rugby match at Stadium de Toulouse was delayed indefinitely after a paratrooper became trapped on the stadium roof. The unusual scene unfolded as three parachutists were scheduled to land on the pitch as part of the pre-game entertainment, moments before the kickoff.
Parachutist Stranded on Stadium Roof
During the aerial display, the final paratrooper’s parachute became entangled in the stadium’s roofing structure. The chute snagged on the building, leaving the individual suspended above a section of stands filled with local fans.
Kick-off Delayed Amid Rescue Efforts
Initially, despite the unusual circumstances, officials announced a 30-minute delay to the scheduled 3 pm kickoff to allow for the paratrooper’s rescue. However, this initial estimate proved optimistic as emergency services were yet to arrive at the Stade de Toulouse. For safety precautions, spectators were promptly evacuated from the seating area directly beneath the suspended paratrooper.
Makeshift Landing Pad and Cheering Crowds
Responding swiftly, authorities began constructing a makeshift landing platform using tackle bags in case the parachute lines failed. A partially inflated bouncy castle was also deployed as part of the safety measures. Adding to the surreal scene, even the Toulouse lion mascot was observed assisting, carrying pieces of equipment to the area. After approximately 20 minutes in the air, the arrival of a fire truck was met with enthusiastic cheers from supporters of both Toulouse and Sale Sharks. Firefighters extended a ladder to reach and safely retrieve the stranded individual, who was then lowered to the ground without injury.
Match Resumes After Unusual Delay
The stadium erupted in applause following the successful rescue. Attention then quickly turned to the rescheduled start time for the Champions Cup match. Notably, one of the other parachutists had successfully landed on the pitch and placed the match ball, prior to the incident.
Teams Return to Field Following Pre-Game Drama
The players eventually returned to the field approximately 40 minutes after the originally scheduled kickoff. For both Toulouse and Sale Sharks, the delayed Champions Cup match will undoubtedly be remembered for the unprecedented pre-game events that unfolded. Earlier on Sunday, Bordeaux secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a 43-31 victory over Ulster. Bordeaux will now host Munster in the quarter-finals. Glasgow Warriors also achieved a decisive 43-19 victory over Leicester on Saturday, while Castres defeated Benetton, and Leinster dominated Harlequins in other Champions Cup fixtures.
