Djokovic Unsure of Murray’s Location Ahead of Monte-Carlo Masters
World number one tennis star Novak Djokovic has admitted he is uncertain of Andy Murray‘s whereabouts as the British former world number one will not be part of his coaching team at this week’s Monte-Carlo Masters. Djokovic returns to competitive action for the first time since his defeat in the Miami Open final, a match where Murray observed from his player’s box.
Murray’s Absence from Monte-Carlo
While the Serbian champion has an agreement to rejoin forces with his former rival later in the clay court season, he will be supported by a familiar face in a temporary coaching capacity this week. Djokovic has tempered expectations for his performance at this initial clay tournament.
The high-profile player-coach collaboration between Djokovic and Murray began in the off-season, following Murray‘s retirement from professional tennis less than four months prior. Murray has since been present in Djokovic‘s entourage, notably during events in Indian Wells and Miami.
However, the retired British player is not in Monaco for the current Masters 1000 event. Djokovic has clarified that the Monte-Carlo Masters was never included in their agreed working arrangement.
Djokovic’s Brother to Step in as Temporary Coach
“I honestly have no idea,” Djokovic responded with a smile when questioned about Murray‘s location.
“I spoke with him around four or five days ago, and he was back home. He is, understandably, focused on family and I believe working on his golf swing, which seems to be his priority this week.”
Instead of Murray, Djokovic will receive guidance from his younger brother, Marko Djokovic. Marko, a former professional player who reached a career-high ranking of 574 in 2019 and participated in several tour-level competitions, will assume the coaching role this week.
Marko Djokovic in Coaching Role
“My brother, Marko, is here assisting me in a tennis coach capacity this week,” stated the two-time former Monte-Carlo champion.
“Working with Andy this week was never scheduled or part of our program. I considered having someone join my fitness coach and physio team.
“Marko, my brother, was pleased to join me, which offers support on a different, emotional level. Spending time with my brother on tour is beneficial as we don’t see each other frequently, making it valuable for me.”
Reunion with Murray at Madrid Open
Djokovic is scheduled to reunite with Murray at the Madrid Open, another Masters 1000 tournament commencing on April 23rd. This event will mark their first tournament together since Miami, where the Serbian player reached his first final in almost six months.
The 37-year-old player elaborated, “We discussed Miami, acknowledging a slight disappointment at losing the final.
“However, overall, it was a successful tournament with high-caliber tennis from my perspective. I maintained a set-win streak until the final, served effectively, and performed well. While the final involved two tight tiebreaks and he played better, that is the outcome.”
“Reflecting on my Miami performance, it provides considerable encouragement and positivity regarding my game. We intend to collaborate again in Madrid and are considering Roland Garros, although we need to discuss this further post-Madrid.”
