Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia unleashed a wave of ballistic missiles across Ukraine, with the capital Kyiv among the cities targeted, officials reported Sunday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the attacks, citing multiple explosions in the city.
Impact in Kyiv: Casualties and Damage
Mayor Klitschko stated that explosions rocked Kyiv, resulting in at least three individuals wounded and damage to an office building. Falling debris from impacted structures also caused further destruction, and reports indicated fires erupting in various districts of the capital. Emergency responders were dispatched to provide aid to the injured.
Tragically, Klitschko later announced the discovery of a deceased man on a Kyiv street affected by the missile strikes, raising the casualty toll.
Nationwide Overnight Attacks
The Kyiv Independent news outlet reported that the Russian assault extended beyond the capital, hitting locations throughout Ukraine during the overnight hours, indicating a widespread coordinated attack.
Ukrainian Air Defense Response
Ukraine’s Air Force detailed a comprehensive aerial attack involving a combination of 23 missiles, including ballistic and cruise variants, alongside 109 unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Air defense systems reportedly intercepted 13 missiles. However, the Air Force noted the limited effectiveness of current defenses against Iskander missiles, a type of short-range ballistic missile used in the offensive.
Defense forces successfully downed forty Iranian-designed attack drones and an additional 53 decoy drones, the latter seemingly deployed to saturate and divert air defense capabilities.
