COLORADO SPRINGS—In a move to bolster national security, the Pentagon is exploring options beyond traditional defense contractors to address a formidable component of its proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system: space-based interceptors designed to neutralize enemy missiles during flight. This ambitious project seeks innovative solutions for space-based missile defense, marking a significant shift in strategy. The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Space Force have announced plans to convene a conference later this month, specifically inviting participation from commercial companies outside the conventional defense industry. This initiative underscores the critical need for cutting-edge technology in modern missile interception.
Focus on Early Interception Capabilities
Scheduled for April 20-May 2 in Huntsville, Alabama, the conference will examine space-interception concepts, with a distinct emphasis on methods to destroy missiles during their boost phase. According to a published notice, “Non-Traditional Defense Contractors are highly encouraged to attend as MDA is extremely interested in innovative and disruptive capabilities and approaches that will support the SBI program.”
“MDA is interested in concepts that are capable of boost-phase intercept,” the notification indicated. The boost phase, the initial ascent of a missile through Earth’s atmosphere immediately following launch, represents a crucial window for interception. During this phase, missiles travel at a slower pace and follow more predictable trajectories, making them more susceptible to defensive measures. This early interception strategy is a key element of the Golden Dome missile defense architecture.
The agency is also soliciting concepts for subsequent stages of missile interception, encompassing post-boost, early midcourse, and midcourse intercept capabilities. This includes both kinetic and non-kinetic systems, highlighting a comprehensive approach to missile defense technology.

The Golden Dome framework signifies a re-emergence of space-based missile defense concepts initially investigated during the Reagan administration’s Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as “Star Wars.” That ambitious program was ultimately abandoned due to technological constraints and prohibitive costs. Despite these advancements, the Golden Dome project faces considerable challenges as it aims to safeguard the entire United States from advanced threats, including both ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
