Recounting a poignant moment, John described his reaction to taking Zachary to senior school. “We accompanied Zachary to secondary school when he turned 13, and upon returning home, I became overwhelmed with emotion,” he revealed. In conversation with The Times, he explained to Furnish, “‘I will no longer see my young son.’ I lamented the inability to physically carry him, as my children have profoundly enriched my existence. My focus is now on my sons. We are dedicated to ensuring their well-being and instilling gratitude without excessive indulgence, acknowledging my public persona,” Elton John elaborated.

The conversation transitioned to discuss deeper themes as John delved into the meaning of his music and confronting mortality. He explicated, “And subsequently, reaching the chorus, I realised its thematic focus was my own death, my passing. As a 76-year-old man, which I was at that time, with children and a spouse, mortality becomes salient. You contemplate, ‘How much time remains? How long? I hope for considerably more time than is potentially left.'”

John described a powerful emotional experience during a recording session. “Consequently, upon reaching the chorus and abruptly grasping its meaning, I was overcome and lost composure for 45 minutes. It was a profoundly impactful moment for me,” he admitted.
Overcoming Emotion to Complete Recording
Detailing his recovery and return to recording, he added, “Following 45 minutes of consolation, I regained composure and recorded the following day. When singing about being swept away by the sea and life’s conclusion, it unexpectedly affected me.” He concluded, “It’s a truly beautiful song. I completed it in a single take the next day. I simply entered and performed the vocals and piano simultaneously.”
