Grand National: Celebre D’Allen Receives Heartening Update After Race Incident

Trainers of Celebre D’Allen have shared an encouraging update after the horse experienced a collapse during Saturday’s Grand National steeplechase. The chestnut gelding was one of two participants requiring prompt veterinary attention at the conclusion of the demanding race at Aintree, while jockey Michael Nolan faces a 10-day suspension following a stewards’ inquiry into his riding performance.

Anxious Wait Turns to Relief for Celebre D’Allen

The 125/1 outsider struggled at the second-to-last obstacle and succumbed to exhaustion soon after clearing the final jump. Stewards determined that Nolan persisted in racing when Celebre D’Allen ‘appeared spent’. Supporters anxiously awaited news on his condition and were relieved to learn he was able to walk into a horse ambulance unaided before being transported back to his stables for further assessment.

Positive Sunday Update

More positive news emerged on Sunday morning as trainers Philip Hobbs & Johnson White posted a video of Celebre D’Allen enjoying sunshine on their official social media account. The accompanying message stated: “Celebre D’Allen bright & breezy this morning @AintreeRaces after running so well in the Grand National.”

Race Outcome and Broadway Boy Incident

Nick Rockett secured victory in the Grand National for trainer Willie Mullins, but the event was partially overshadowed by worries for Celebre D’Allen and Broadway Boy. Broadway Boy suffered a significant fall, landing heavily on his neck during the race.

Similar to Celebre D’Allen, Broadway Boy was able to walk into a horse ambulance after receiving treatment from veterinary professionals at the course. Jockey Tom Bellamy, however, was taken to hospital to receive treatment for a broken wrist sustained in the fall.

Stewards’ Inquiry Leads to Jockey Suspension

British Horseracing Authority Report

The official stewards’ report from the British Horseracing Authority detailed the inquiry: “An investigation was conducted to assess whether Micheal Nolan, the jockey riding Celebre d’Allen, continued in the race when the horse appeared to be fatigued and was visibly losing ground following the second-last fence.”

“The jockey and the veterinary official were interviewed regarding the incident, and video recordings were reviewed. As a result, the jockey was suspended for a period of 10 days.”

Nolan’s Suspension Details

Nolan’s ban will be enforced between April 19th and April 26th, as well as on May 3rd and May 5th. The Irish jockey had been appointed as the primary jockey for the Hobbs and White stable in 2023, following a series of injury setbacks in his career.

Expert Analysis of Riding Conduct

Reacting to the inquiry into Nolan’s ride, Racing TV presenter Nick Luck commented: “Evidently, in a race run at a demanding pace, particularly with the unseasonably warm weather, it is crucial – and jockeys are instructed – that if a horse has given its maximum effort, the rider must pull the horse up.”
