Phoebe Gates, Daughter of Bill Gates, Ventures into Sustainable Fashion and Launches New Podcast
Phoebe Gates, the youngest daughter of Bill Gates, appears poised to establish herself as a significant figure in her own right. The 22-year-old Stanford University alumna recently unveiled her new podcast and hinted at the upcoming launch of Phia, her “sustainable” online shopping platform.
Introducing “The Burnouts” Podcast
The newly launched podcast, titled “The Burnouts,” is co-hosted by Phoebe Gates and her business partner, Sophia Kianni. In the inaugural episode, the aspiring entrepreneur openly discussed her concerns about being perceived as a “nepo baby,” expressing a strong desire to prove her capabilities independently.
Addressing “Nepo Baby” Accusations
“I am aware of my privilege. I am a nepo baby,” Phoebe acknowledged, further elaborating on her “insecurity” surrounding this label. She recounted a conversation with her parents, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, regarding her sustainable fashion venture.
Parental Guidance from Bill and Melinda Gates
Phoebe shared that her parents, Bill, 69, and Melinda, 60, were initially “very cautious” when she presented her concept for a sustainable fashion website. She recalled Bill questioning her commitment with, “Are you sure you want to pursue this?”
Bill and Melinda, who formally separated in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, also have two other children, Jennifer, 28, and Rory, 25.
They emphasized the importance of Phoebe completing her education at Stanford University before entering the competitive fashion technology sector. She successfully graduated last spring with a degree in Human Biology.
Inspiration from Stella McCartney and Sustainable Fashion
This mini-mogul, with a keen interest in style, initially indicated her intention to join the fashion industry in 2022. She revealed that her mother’s friendship with Stella McCartney, daughter of music icon Paul McCartney and a celebrated fashion designer, inspired her. Phoebe recognized that offspring of prominent figures could indeed create their own distinct professional paths.
“Stella and my mom are close friends,” Phoebe mentioned in a previous interview with WWD. She recounted her childhood excitement, “Even when I was little, Stella would send me gifts and notes, and I was always thrilled. I had been asking my mom for a long time if I could meet her.”
Embracing Privilege to Drive Change
Speaking about Stella McCartney’s influence, Phoebe stated, “I felt a strong connection to her because she utilized her platform, derived from her father’s fame, to create her own identity. Rather than feeling confined by public perception, she embraced her privilege and leveraged it to instigate positive change.”
Phoebe further explained her own perspective: “I deeply resonate with this idea. Being my parents’ daughter grants me significant privilege, but it does not define my entire identity. I aspire to forge my own path and establish my individuality, separate from my family’s legacy, while still utilizing my position to contribute meaningfully to society.”
