The popular Antiques Roadshow series made a celebrated return in its latest episode broadcast on Sunday, April 6th, from Ebrington Square in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland. A team of specialists were present to evaluate a diverse array of items brought in by members of the public, seeking appraisals for their vintage and collectible possessions.
Vintage Waterman Pens Steal the Show in Derry/Londonderry
During the program, one visitor presented a pristine set of Waterman ballpoint pens. These pens, a cherished gift from her father who had served in the Dutch Merchant Navy, held significant sentimental value, though she admitted to never having used them.
Expert Mark Hill meticulously examined the writing instruments, delving into their intriguing history. He emphasized their “original” condition and the importance of the subtle details inscribed upon them, recognizing them as exceptional examples of their type.
Unused Pens Attract Keen Interest
Hill inquired if the owner might ever consider using them: “Would you ever be tempted to use them?” The guest responded with a definitive, “No. Just never thought about it.”
Clearly impressed, Hill remarked on their superior quality: “Well, I can certainly tell you it surpasses the average ballpoint pen. I haven’t encountered a set like this for a very, very long time.”
He further speculated about their past, adding, “I wonder about their origin, and how they survived potentially being torpedoed at least once. Given that these likely date from the late 1930s, my assumption is that he must have carefully stored them somewhere before gifting them to you.”
Valuation Revealed
The expert then proceeded to reveal the pens’ considerable valuation. “You have stored them exceptionally wisely, and I am delighted you did! In their original box, they are worth between four and six hundred pounds.”
The guest reacted with surprise to the estimated value, exclaiming: “Really?! They’re lovely. I wouldn’t sell them.”
Her resolute refusal to sell the pens visibly surprised Hill, prompting him to further explore her stance, yet she remained firm in her decision.
Instead of selling, Hill proposed an alternative path for the treasured items. He advised: “Consider having them restored, and then use them to write a letter with them.”
“They are magnificent examples of Art Deco design by one of the world’s leading vintage fountain pen makers, truly superb items. Thank you very much!”
The guest responded positively, “Well done, Dad. Yes, they’re beautiful!”
Other Notable Finds in Northern Ireland
In other segments of this Antiques Roadshow episode, specialists expressed awe at various artefacts presented during their visit to Northern Ireland. These included:
- Ronnie Archer-Morgan engaged with a collector who had amassed over a thousand compact purses.
- Gordon Foster was presented with a remarkable hurling trophy.
- John Sandon identified a pair of plates originating from the 18th century.
