UNICEF Urges Israel to Permit Aid Delivery to Gaza Amidst Prolonged Blockade
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is imploring Israel to grant aid convoys entry into the Gaza Strip, where approximately one million children and young individuals are facing dire circumstances. This plea comes as the region experiences a significant halt in aid.
Longest Aid Blockade Since War’s Inception
Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated on Saturday that, “No assistance has been permitted into the Gaza Strip since March 2, 2025 – marking the most extended duration of aid obstruction since the conflict began.”
Critical Shortages and Rising Risks
This obstruction has precipitated critical scarcities of essential resources, including sustenance, potable water, safe havens, and medical provisions, Beigbeder explained.
He cautioned that the absence of these necessities would likely cause a surge in malnutrition, illnesses, and other preventable conditions, leading to a potential escalation in avoidable deaths among children.
Lifesaving Aid Held Up
“UNICEF possesses thousands of aid pallets ready to be transported into the Gaza Strip,” Beigbeder highlighted. “The majority of this aid is crucial for survival – yet, instead of preserving lives, it remains in storage. Its immediate entry must be authorized. This is not an optional act of goodwill; it is a mandatory action under international law.”
Call for Basic Needs to be Met
Beigbeder further emphasized, “For the welfare of over 1 million children within the Gaza Strip, we earnestly urge Israeli authorities to ensure, at minimum, the fundamental needs of the population are satisfied, in accordance with its duties under international humanitarian law.”
“This encompasses their legal responsibility to guarantee that families are furnished with the food, medical care, and other vital supplies required for their survival.”
Context of Aid Halting
Following the expiration of the initial phase of a ceasefire on March 2, Israel implemented a complete halt of aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, aiming to exert pressure on the Palestinian faction Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated at that time his decision against accepting a US proposition to prolong the initial ceasefire phase, citing Hamas’s unwillingness to reciprocate.
