Sierra Kerr and Father Josh Kerr to Compete in Surfing’s Challenger Series

Surfing sensation Sierra Kerr has achieved qualification for the Challenger Series, the esteemed second tier of international professional surfing and a vital pathway to the World Surf League (WSL). Turning 18 recently, Kerr, an Australian native and former junior world champion, has been recognized as a prodigious talent since childhood. Her progression into upper echelons of competitive surfing was widely anticipated.

Unexpected Father-Daughter Duo

In a surprising turn of events last month, the final qualifying competition concluded, revealing the roster for the 2025 Challenger Series. Alongside Sierra Kerr’s name was another familiar Kerr: her father, Josh Kerr. This unforeseen development has added an intriguing dimension to the upcoming series.

Josh Kerr’s Return to Competition

Josh Kerr, now 41, enjoyed a celebrated tenure in the WSL during the early 2010s, consistently achieving top 10 finishes for four consecutive years. A pioneer in aerial surfing, credited with inventing the “Kerrupt” maneuver, Kerr retired from professional competition in the latter part of the 2010s. However, accompanying his daughter to various global competitions reignited his competitive spirit. “If I’m already involved, I might as well participate,” Kerr remarked, encapsulating his decision to join the Challenger Series.

A Family Immersed in Surfing

Coordinating an interview with Sierra and Josh Kerr proved challenging. Their demanding travel schedules, surfing competitions, and unforeseen circumstances caused delays. Eventually, they connected amidst the backdrop of the WSL’s El Salvador Pro event. Surfing is unequivocally a central element of the Kerr family’s lifestyle and passion.

Sierra Kerr’s Aspiring WSL Entry

Sierra Kerr first experienced the WSL stage as a wildcard entrant in Fiji the previous year. She remains keenly interested in the ongoing season, with close friends among the competitors. Pending successful qualification through the Challenger Series, Sierra is poised to become a full-time contender at the highest level of surfing in the coming year.

“Last year, I wasn’t particularly focused on qualifying, as I prioritized completing high school,” Sierra explained. “Now, I’m eager to join and compete alongside my friends—Bettylou Sakura Johnson, Caity Simmers, Molly Picklum. I am excited to measure my abilities against theirs and tackle challenging waves.”

Josh Kerr’s Perspective: Fun and Games

Josh Kerr maintains a more relaxed approach. “For me, it remains primarily recreational,” he chuckled. While acknowledging his competitive nature when competing, he indicated no intentions of adopting stringent training or dietary regimes typical of elite athletes. Kerr senior clarified he does not harbor ambitions for a full WSL comeback, although acknowledging the precedent set by veteran surfers like Kelly Slater.

“That would be quite incredible,” Sierra responded with amusement at the prospect of joining the WSL alongside her father. “I’m unsure if it’s his objective, but it would be amazing.” Josh tempered expectations, stating, “Let’s first assess if I can still be competitive.”

A Unique Competitive Dynamic

The prospect of Josh Kerr, a former top-tier surfer, competing against a younger generation of stars in the Challenger Series, commencing in Newcastle in June, is highly anticipated. However, Josh downplays any notion of intimidation among his younger rivals. “I doubt they recognize me,” he admitted. “I’ve been absent from the tour for seven years, and these competitors are predominantly between 17 and 21. I’m likely just viewed as Sierra’s father.”

Early Sporting Influences

Unsurprisingly, Sierra’s upbringing was steeped in sports, influenced by her father’s career. In a birthday tribute on Instagram, Josh remarked on Sierra’s diverse sporting journey: “From ballet to skateboarding, golf, rugby, fishing, surfing, and beyond, being by your side has been a joy.” Initially recognized for her skateboarding prowess, surfing became her primary focus during her teenage years.

Turning Point in Indonesia

A pivotal surfing expedition to Indonesia altered her sporting trajectory. At 13, Sierra accompanied her father and friends—Caity Simmers, Bella Kenworthy, Erin Brooks—on a transformative surf trip. “Being with the group and encouraging each other was incredibly enjoyable,” Sierra recounted. “That trip solidified my passion. I realized, ‘This is incredibly fun, I want to continue pursuing this’.”

Surfing as a Lifestyle, Not Just a Sport

Josh emphasized his intention to avoid pressuring Sierra into competitive surfing, aiming to preserve its role as a lifestyle pursuit for her and the family. “Surfing was always accessible, even as she explored other sports,” he explained. “I preferred that surfing remained a passion for her, until she chose to make it a competitive endeavor.”

Navigating Parent-Child Dynamics in Sport

The dynamics of parent-child relationships in sports can be delicate. Josh acknowledges the potential pitfalls of overzealous parenting. “I observe it from the sidelines,” he admitted, adding, “My priority is to be a father first and foremost, and appreciate this shared experience.” While serving as Sierra’s coach, he strives to maintain a balanced, supportive approach.

Surfing has been profoundly enriching in my life, as a pastime and a way of life,” Josh reflected. “Regardless of her competitive journey, I hope Sierra retains her daily desire to engage with surfing and the ocean.”

Exciting Era for Women’s Surfing

Sierra’s emergence coincides with a dynamic period for women’s surfing. Equal prize money, synchronized schedules, and rapid skill advancements in both powerful waves and aerial maneuvers have revolutionized the sport.

“It’s an opportune moment to enter the professional ranks,” Sierra noted, displaying a slight American inflection from time spent in California. “My peers and I aim to elevate the standards set by predecessors, pushing boundaries and establishing new benchmarks for future generations.”

Legacy and Future of Surfing

Sierra’s role among a transformative generation of female surfers mirrors her father’s contribution to aerial surfing. “Witnessing Sierra at the forefront of innovation in women’s surfing is remarkable,” Josh commented. “The evolution of women’s surfing and their dismantling of barriers is the most compelling aspect of the sport currently.”

His daughter’s passion has enriched Josh’s life. “She is my closest companion, my partner in adventure,” he shared. “She’s my jet ski partner in sizable waves and a skilled ski driver.”

In the future, Sierra may seek greater independence from her father’s coaching. Josh envisions retirement and occasional visits from his accomplished daughter. However, for now, they remain a close partnership. “Dad often says he’ll be present until I ask him to step back,” Sierra mentioned. As the Challenger Series approaches, Kerr senior will compete alongside his daughter, embodying a unique father-daughter narrative within the past, present, and future of surfing.
