Steven Moffat Reveals Matt Smith’s Initial Struggles as 11th Doctor in Doctor Who

Former Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, disclosed that actor Matt Smith experienced considerable anxiety and “punched his pillow” in vexation during his early days portraying the Eleventh Doctor. Moffat, who helmed the beloved BBC science fiction series from 2010 to 2017, shared insights into Smith’s challenging transition into the role, following David Tennant’s popular tenure as the Time Lord.

Public Scrutiny and Self-Doubt

In a conversation with Radio Times, the writer recounted both joyous moments and difficult periods from his time on Doctor Who. He recalled the intense public reaction to Smith’s casting, noting skepticism about the actor replacing David Tennant. Moffat explained that many initially deemed Smith “too young, too pretty” for the iconic role, even humorously commenting on Smith’s “ridiculous” chin.

Moffat elaborated on the significant pressure Smith faced prior to his debut as the Eleventh Doctor. “Matt endured a year of criticism before the episodes were even broadcast,” Moffat stated. “He still brings it up. He would go to bed overwhelmed and punch his pillow out of frustration.”

The showrunner continued, “He struggled with self-belief and doubted whether it would resonate with audiences. However, his apprehension proved unfounded. Once his portrayal aired, everyone realized what we had recognized for a year – that he is not merely a youthful, attractive actor, but an exceptionally talented one.”

Writing Challenges and Personal Hardship

Moffat also reflected on the writing obstacles he encountered throughout his tenure on Doctor Who. He identified the penultimate series and the landmark 50th anniversary special as particularly demanding projects, albeit for contrasting reasons.

“Around the midpoint of the final series, a deeply personal event occurred – my mother was terminally ill and subsequently passed away – which was profoundly difficult,” Moffat shared. “During this period, I was writing ‘Extremis’ [episode six] while also facing the two-part finale and the Christmas special. The looming deadlines and commitments felt immense.”

An “Impossible Commission”

Moffat further detailed the immense pressure surrounding the 50th anniversary episode, “The Day of the Doctor.” He described it as “an impossible commission” given the vast expectations from both the audience and the BBC. The broadcaster envisioned the anniversary akin to “that year’s Olympics” in terms of scale and impact, but without a commensurate budget.

Despite the immense pressure, Moffat expressed pride in the final result. “Yet, it did achieve all of that,” he admitted. “The process wasn’t enjoyable due to the sheer weight of expectation, but it was a rare instance where I championed something ambitious, and it actually surpassed expectations. Critically and publicly, it was very well-received.”

Matt Smith’s Post-Doctor Who Success

Following his departure from Doctor Who in 2013, Matt Smith was succeeded by Peter Capaldi in the titular role. Smith has since garnered further acclaim and success, starring in acclaimed, award-winning productions such as “The Crown” and “House of the Dragon,” cementing his position as a versatile and respected actor.
