Scarlette Douglas Reflects on Departure from ‘A Place in the Sun’

Television presenter Scarlette Douglas, a popular figure among viewers of A Place in the Sun, has spoken about her decision to leave the Channel 4 programme. Douglas, who became a fan favourite since joining the show in 2015, exited the property-focused series in 2022 after nearly seven years. In an exclusive interview, she revealed that her increasingly busy schedule with other presenting roles was the primary factor behind her departure from the show.

Reason for Leaving “A Place in the Sun”

Douglas explained, “I departed from that programme in 2022. I had been working on it for approximately six and a half years, but I was becoming increasingly occupied with other television commitments. I am currently involved in numerous property programmes with my brother. We have series three of Worst House on the Street forthcoming. We also recently participated in Bake Off, which was a fantastic experience. We have another new series scheduled for release in July. However, my workload was simply becoming too demanding.”

Fond Memories and New Opportunities

Speaking at the Smiley Charity Film Awards, the property show host elaborated on her experience: “I dedicated six and a half years to A Place in the Sun. It was where I honed my skills and gained valuable experience in the industry. It was an incredible opportunity, but I felt it was the appropriate moment to progress and pursue different ventures.”

The Realities of Filming “A Place in the Sun”

Scarlette’s position on A Place in the Sun provided her with the opportunity to travel to diverse locations across Europe, assisting prospective buyers in their search for ideal homes.

However, Douglas highlighted that the on-screen glamour belies the demanding nature of the job, with considerable behind-the-scenes effort unseen by viewers.

“It’s genuinely challenging,” Scarlette admitted. “People understandably perceive it as idyllic, and aspects of it are enjoyable. But a 47-minute episode necessitates five days to a week of filming. A significant amount of effort is involved. It is arduous work.”

She further detailed the filming conditions: “You are unable to wear sunglasses or a hat for extended periods. Time for hydration is limited. It’s a continuous process, and while it may appear glamorous on television, it’s actually a very physically taxing show.”

Venturing Beyond Property TV

In the same year as her A Place in the Sun exit, Scarlette embraced a new challenge by participating in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in Australia.

Expanding Her Presenting Career

Following her stint in the jungle, she secured a presenting role on Good Morning Britain, occasionally delivering entertainment news updates to audiences.

Collaborations with Brother Stuart Douglas

Currently, Scarlette collaborates closely with her brother, Stuart Douglas, a former footballer, in their joint property development business. In 2022, they partnered to present Worst House on the Street, a programme that follows them as they guide families in renovating dilapidated houses into dream residences on a budget.

Upcoming Charity TV Appearance

The siblings also recently participated in a celebrity edition of the popular ITV quiz show The 1% Club, scheduled to broadcast later in 2025 as part of the Soccer Aid charity football match celebrations.

Teasing “The 1% Club” Experience

Scarlette teased viewers about the episode, stating, “The pressure is immense, particularly when you are in the studio audience setting. However, it was immensely enjoyable, and my primary goal was to outperform my brother, which I successfully achieved, so it was a positive outcome.”
