Cambodian HeroRAT Sets New Landmine Detection Record
In a remarkable achievement highlighting the crucial role of animal ingenuity in humanitarian efforts, a landmine-detecting rat in Cambodia has established a new global benchmark. Ronin, a five-year-old African giant pouched rat, has become the first rodent to discover over 100 landmines and numerous other pieces of deadly unexploded ordnance. This HeroRAT’s extraordinary work significantly contributes to making Cambodian land safer for communities affected by decades of conflict.
Ronin’s Record-Breaking Discoveries
Since commencing its operations in 2021, Ronin has successfully located an impressive 109 landmines and 15 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO), according to a statement from Apopo, the organization responsible for training these specialized animals. Cambodia continues to grapple with the dangerous legacy of extensive unexploded munitions scattered across the nation, a consequence of approximately two decades of civil war concluding in 1998.
Acknowledging Ronin’s exceptional contributions, the Guinness Book of World Records emphasized that his “vital work” is significantly improving the lives of individuals who have long endured the constant threat of landmines during their daily routines. The fear of accidental detonation has loomed large in these communities for years.
The HeroRAT Program: Utilizing Rodents for Humanitarian Demining
Apopo, headquartered in Tanzania, currently maintains a cohort of 104 trained rats, affectionately known as HeroRATS. These remarkable creatures are meticulously trained to identify the chemical compounds present in landmines and other weaponry left behind after conflicts. Their light weight is a critical advantage, as they are too small to trigger the detonation of these dangerous explosives.
The efficiency of HeroRATS in landmine detection is astounding. Apopo reports that a rat can meticulously examine an area equivalent to a tennis court in approximately 30 minutes. In stark contrast, a human using a conventional metal detector could require up to four days to thoroughly clear the same area.
Beyond landmine detection, these intelligent rats also possess the ability to identify tuberculosis, a contagious disease primarily affecting the lungs. Apopo notes that their detection capabilities far surpass the speed of traditional laboratory microscopy in identifying this illness.
Ronin Surpasses Previous HeroRAT Record Holder
Ronin’s outstanding achievements in Cambodia’s northern Preah Vihear province have eclipsed the previous record established by Magawa, another HeroRAT. Magawa had located 71 landmines and was distinguished with a gold medal in 2020 for his extraordinary bravery and service. Ronin’s new record signifies a major step forward in the use of animal-assisted detection.
APOPO’s Global Impact in Landmine Clearance
Since its inception 25 years ago, APOPO has played a pivotal role in global demining efforts, clearing an impressive 169,713 landmines and other explosive remnants of war worldwide. Over 52,000 of these dangerous items were cleared in Cambodia alone. The charity extends its life-saving operations to other war-affected nations, including Ukraine, South Sudan, and Azerbaijan, demonstrating a commitment to creating safer environments globally.
Despite the progress made, the Landmine Monitor estimates that between four to six million landmines and other unexploded munitions remain buried in Cambodian soil.
