Florida Woman Rescues Dog From Alligator Attack in Tampa
In a dramatic encounter in Tampa, Florida, a woman demonstrated extraordinary bravery by rescuing her dog from the jaws of a sizable alligator. The incident, which highlights the potential dangers of wildlife encounters in residential areas, saw the quick-thinking owner intervene to save her beloved pet from the predator’s grasp.
Alligator Lunges at Dog During Evening Walk
The incident unfolded as Kim Jones was walking her dog, Kona, near a lake in Tampa. A 6-foot-6 alligator suddenly emerged and attacked Kona, seizing the dog’s head in its powerful jaws.
“‘(Kona’s) facing it, it’s facing her, and it jumped out and got her,” Jones recounted to Fox13, emphasizing the suddenness of the assault. “She was in up to here; her whole head was inside its mouth.”

Showing incredible resolve, Jones, described as ultra-fit, immediately reacted to protect her canine companion. She explained, “I stopped thinking and just dove on it, jumped on it and straddled it… and was trying to pry its jaws open.”
Jones managed to successfully pry the alligator’s jaws apart from behind, freeing Kona from the reptile’s hold. “Its back was to me, so it made me just jump on,” she noted, explaining her instinctive reaction.
“We just got lucky because just as quickly as it ran after us, it ran back into the water, and we were out of there,” Jones added, relieved at the narrow escape.
Prior Observation of the Alligator
Jones mentioned having seen the alligator lurking near the lake a few months prior to the attack. The recent encounter occurred as they were walking by the lakeside. She attempted to pull Kona away from the water’s edge when she noticed the approaching reptile, but Kona’s strength proved too much.

Injuries Sustained by Both Dog and Owner
Both Jones and Kona sustained injuries during the ordeal, requiring stitches. Kona is currently wearing a protective cone as part of her recovery but is expected to fully heal from the wounds.
“Kona is My Baby”: Empty Nester’s Bond with Pet
Jones described her deep bond with Kona, stating she is an ’empty nester’ and “Kona is her baby.” This profound connection fueled her courageous actions, viewing Kona not just as a pet but as a cherished family member worthy of the same life-saving response as a human in danger.
Risks of Alligator Encounters and Safety Advice
Experts emphasize the inherent risks associated with attempting to retrieve anything from an alligator’s jaws. Such actions are fraught with danger and rarely successful.
Furthermore, intervening in an alligator attack significantly heightens the rescuer’s risk of becoming prey themselves. Authorities in Florida and other regions with alligator populations regularly advise residents on preventative measures to minimize encounters.
Safety Recommendations for Coexisting with Alligators
To reduce the likelihood of conflict with alligators, officials recommend the following precautions:
- Maintain a safe distance from the water’s edge in alligator habitats.
- Keep pets indoors, especially near bodies of water known to harbor alligators.
- Never feed alligators, as this can lead them to associate humans with food.
- Avoid providing alligators with easy access to food sources.
Warning to Others: Potential for Tragedy
Jones reflected on the incident, cautioning, “It could easily happen, and you might not be that lucky to get your child or your pet.” Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the potential danger posed by alligators in shared environments.

“Many people say they are more afraid of us than we are of them, clearly not the case,” Jones commented, highlighting the aggressive nature alligators can display.
Past Fatal Alligator Attack in Florida
The dangers of alligator encounters were tragically underscored in February 2023 when 85-year-old Gloria Serge was killed by an alligator in Fort Pierce while walking her dog. Serge was attempting to shield her pet when the alligator attacked, ultimately resulting in her death. Surveillance footage captured the horrific event.
Jones hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale, urging vigilance and respect for wildlife in shared habitats to prevent future incidents.
