Apple Martin Responds to “Mean Girl” Criticism and Online Scrutiny

Apple Martin, daughter of actress Gwyneth Paltrow, has addressed the online criticism she faced following alleged “mean girl” behavior at Le Bal des Débutantes. The 20-year-old model and daughter of Paltrow and musician Chris Martin, spoke to Interview magazine about navigating life as a “nepo baby” in Hollywood and the impact of public scrutiny.

Addressing Online Backlash

In a conversation with Interview magazine’s editor-in-chief, Mel Ottenberg, Martin was asked about encountering negative comments about herself online. This follows controversy sparked in November 2024 after a video clip circulated, portraying her actions at the prestigious Le Bal des Débutantes in Paris as unkind.

Le Bal des Débutantes Controversy

The incident at Le Bal des Débutantes, an exclusive event attended by Martin with her celebrity parents, led to accusations that she was “stealing the spotlight” from another debutante during photographs. Despite sources close to Gwyneth Paltrow claiming the moment was misinterpreted, the video drew significant criticism across social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

“Crazy Conspiracies” and Social Media Avoidance

While Martin did not directly mention the debutante ball incident in her recent interview, she did refer to “crazy conspiracies” circulating about her online. She revealed that she has consciously avoided reading social media comments since January 2023, following her Paris Fashion Week debut at Chanel.

“After the Chanel show, I did [read upsetting comments]. Then I quickly realized why everybody has always said, ‘Don’t do it.’ Because even if you see a million positive things, there can be one thing that absolutely wrecks you,” Martin explained, highlighting the detrimental effect negativity can have.

Impact on Mental Well-being

Martin acknowledged the damaging impact hateful online remarks have had on her mental health. She expressed that such negativity could make her feel like avoiding public appearances altogether.

“So, I’ve stopped now and I avoid it like the plague, because I know myself and I know that if I see stuff that isn’t true and that’s really upsetting to me, I’m going to be like, ‘Oh my god, I should never go out in public again.'”

Focusing on Positivity and Acceptance

Currently, Apple Martin is prioritizing a positive outlook and learning to accept the downsides of living in the public eye. “I’ve tried to be like, ‘People are going to say stuff, and that’s okay,'” she stated. “And like everybody, there’s going to be stuff that isn’t true and stuff that is upsetting, and all I can do is just be the best that I can be and be with the people I love and not read random, crazy conspiracies.”

Defense from Fellow Debutante

The Le Bal des Débutantes, held at the Shangri-La in Paris, is an annual event for young women from prominent and affluent families to make their societal debut. Apple Martin attended in a Valentino Haute Couture gown, accompanied by Count Leo Henckel von Donnersmarck, and later joined by her parents.

However, she faced “mean girl” accusations after a viral video appeared to show her overshadowing fellow debutante Aliénor Loppin de Montmort during a photoshoot. In the clip, Martin seemed to move into the frame while Montmort was posing.

The backlash was significant enough that Montmort publicly defended Martin, describing her as “the nicest girl ever” and undeserving of the online negativity.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Perspective

Gwyneth Paltrow also recently addressed the situation, stating that her daughter has always been apprehensive about public attention.

University Life and Future Aspirations

In the Interview feature, Apple Martin also offered a glimpse into her life as a junior at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She lives in an on-campus apartment and revealed she is pursuing a degree in law, history, and society at the private university, where tuition is approximately $67,000 per semester.

“I’m a law, history, and society major, but I wish I would’ve taken—maybe I’ll take a theater course before I leave. It’s a fun balance between my very different extracurriculars and my major,” she mentioned.

Campus Climate and Extracurriculars

Martin commented on the current political climate and college protests, noting a “tense” atmosphere on campus. However, she emphasized the importance of friendships and engaging in enjoyable activities. She is currently involved in the Vanderbilt Original Cast, a theater group, and is preparing for a role in their upcoming musical parody, “Love on an Island.”

Theater versus Film

When questioned about following in her mother’s footsteps as a film actress, Martin expressed a stronger interest in theater. “I would love to do theater because I adore it so much,” she said. “I’ve obviously never done film before, but I’ve been trying to get involved in student films,” acknowledging her passion for performance and her roots as a “theater kid.”

Singing Talents

As part of the Vanderbilt Original Cast, Apple Martin showcases her singing abilities. She humorously noted her low voice often places her in the “boys and Apple” vocal harmony sections. Despite not considering herself the most skilled in the group, she expressed her enthusiasm for performing.
