EU Condemns Trump’s Tariffs as Global Economy Suffers Major Blow

The European Union has strongly denounced President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs as a significant setback for the global economy, triggering defensive responses from world leaders as they assess the wide-ranging implications of these impactful measures on international trade. These levies have sparked concerns about escalating trade tensions and potential economic repercussions worldwide.

International Leaders React to US Trade Tariffs

European Commission President’s Strong Rebuke

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sharp criticism, stating, “There seems to be no order in the disorder. No clear path through the complexity and chaos that is being created as all US trading partners are hit.”

In response to the 20 percent tariffs imposed on EU exports to the United States, she declared that Brussels is “finalising a first package of countermeasures” and actively preparing for further responsive actions.

EU Warns of Protectionism and “Dire Consequences”

The EU chief cautioned that the “uncertainty” generated by President Trump’s dramatic policy shift “will spiral and trigger the rise of further protectionism,” adding a stark warning that “the consequences will be dire for millions of people around the globe.”

Von der Leyen indicated that while “it was not too late to address concerns through negotiations,” the EU would not hesitate to implement additional measures “to protect our interests and our businesses if negotiations fail.”

UK Acknowledges Economic Impact

The United Kingdom, having exited the EU and positioning itself as a key ally of the US, faces lower tariffs compared to the 27-nation bloc. However, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer admitted that the 10 percent tariff levied on UK exports to the US by President Trump will “clearly” exert an economic impact. He affirmed the government’s commitment to “fight for the best deal.”

Italian Prime Minister Urges Trade Deal

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a long-standing ally of Trump, openly criticised his set of tariffs on imports from the EU. She strongly advocated for a negotiated agreement, cautioning that a trade war would “inevitably weaken the West”. Her office announced she had cleared her schedule to dedicate attention to the response to the increased tariffs.

Meloni stated, “The introduction by the US of tariffs towards the EU is a measure that I consider wrong and that does not suit either party.”

Irish Deputy Premier Calls for EU Response

Irish Deputy Premier Simon Harris cautioned that the EU “has to respond if the US refuses to engage, refuses to negotiate.” Addressing reporters in Dublin, Harris asserted the EU’s readiness to respond as a “much larger economic trading bloc” than the US, stating, “We can’t just kind of stand idly by.”

Harris described the EU’s present approach as “calm, is measured, is balanced,” conveying a message of preparedness to respond if necessary, but with a preference for dialogue and engagement.

France to Hold Emergency Meeting

French President Macron has yet to issue a public statement on the tariffs, but is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting with representatives from sectors “impacted by the tariff measures.”

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou characterised the tariffs as “a catastrophe for the economic world,” and “an immense difficulty for Europe,” further stating, “I believe that it is also a catastrophe for the United States and for American citizens.”

Germany Supports EU Efforts for Negotiation

Berlin voiced support for the EU’s efforts to pursue a “negotiated solution” with Washington regarding the new tariffs. However, Germany also cautioned that the bloc is prepared to retaliate with “a balanced, clear and determined response” should discussions fail.

German economy minister Robert Habeck warned that “US tariff mania” carried the risk of “drag countries into recession and cause massive harm worldwide, with dire consequences for many people.” He added, “For consumers in the US, the day will not be ‘Liberation Day’ but ‘Inflation Day’,” referencing Trump’s description of the new duties.

Switzerland Considers Next Steps

Following the imposition of 31 percent tariffs on Switzerland, President Karin Keller-Sutter announced the government would swiftly decide on subsequent actions. She emphasized, “The country’s long-term economic interests are the priority. Respect for international law and free trade are fundamental.”

Poland Suggests Reciprocal Tariffs

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, referencing countermeasures, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Friendship means partnership. Partnership means really and truly reciprocal tariffs. Adequate decisions are needed.”

Spain Ready to Protect National Interests

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stated his government’s readiness to take action to protect Spanish companies and consumers from the repercussions of the new tariffs announced by President Trump.

In a radio interview, Cuerpo deemed the new tariffs “unfair and unjustified.” He echoed the sentiment of other EU counterparts, stating the EU’s eagerness to negotiate to avert a trade war, but affirmed retaliation as necessary if negotiations prove unfruitful.

Concerns Over Global Trade and Industry Impact

Fears of Chinese Goods Surge

Concerns are mounting in Europe that Trump’s elevated customs duties could trigger an influx of inexpensive goods from other nations, notably China.

EU Trade Committee Condemns Measures

Bernd Lange, head of the EU parliament’s trade committee, denounced Trump’s measures as “unjustified, illegal and disproportionate.”

Industry Groups Warn of “Losers”

European industry associations have labelled Trump’s action as counterproductive for both countries and consumers.

The German Automotive Industry Association cautioned that the tariffs would “only create losers” and urged the EU to respond “with necessary force, while continuing to signal its willingness to negotiate.” Similarly, the Association of the German Chemical Industry called upon the EU to “keep a cool head,” warning that “a spiral of escalation would only increase the damage.”

Previous Tariffs and Countermeasures

The EU has already been subjected to multiple US tariff announcements since Trump’s return to office in January. These include a 25 percent levy on auto imports that took effect on Thursday. EU producers have also been affected by a pre-existing 25 percent US tariff on steel and aluminium globally, against which Brussels has committed to countermeasures slated to commence in mid-April.

US Treasury Official Warns Against Retaliation

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent advised countries against retaliating. Speaking to Fox News, he stated, “Sit back, take it in. Because if you retaliate, there will be escalation.”
