Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson Responds to Executive’s Contract Comments
Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson has publicly responded to comments made by team executive Katie Blackburn regarding his contract extension. Blackburn suggested that Hendrickson should be “happy” with the current contract offer, a statement that has seemingly exacerbated ongoing negotiations and drawn a sharp reaction from the star player looking for a new deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Blackburn’s “Be Happy” Remark
Earlier this week at the NFL’s winter meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, Blackburn told reporters that Hendrickson should perhaps adjust his expectations regarding his contract. “I think he should be happy at certain rates that maybe he doesn’t think he’d be happy at,” she stated.
She further elaborated, “I think some of it is on him to be happy at some point, and if he’s not, you know, that’s what holds it up sometimes. So, you know, it takes him to say ‘yes’ to something, and also, we have all the respect in the world for him.”
Hendrickson’s Rebuttal
While under contract through the 2025 season, Hendrickson and his agent were granted permission to explore trade options. However, Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin has publicly expressed a desire to secure a long-term extension for the four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Despite these expressions of interest, a new contract has not yet been agreed upon. Speaking with ESPN’s Pat McAfee, Hendrickson indicated that Blackburn’s recent comments are not conducive to reaching a resolution. He emphasized the need for improved communication between his representatives and the Bengals organization.
“Open line of communication is always open with me and my agent, so if they have anything they’d like to discuss, we’ve been nothing but willing to listen,” Hendrickson stated, highlighting his willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
However, he described the communication process as “poor” at times, indicating inconsistency and a lack of consistent engagement from the team.
Prioritizing Receivers
Hendrickson clarified that he does not begrudge the team for prioritizing contract extensions for star wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who recently secured substantial four-year deals totaling $276 million.
Addressing the situation, Hendrickson said, “And respect to Ja’Marr and Tee,” adding, “I don’t want to take anything from all the great things they’ve accomplished in their careers. They deserve everything that they’ve gotten, and no doubt in my mind they’re going to excel in the National Football League. I have a tremendous respect for both of them.”
He explained his desire for transparency in the team’s planning, stating, “But when it comes to my situation, it would have been nice to know in some ways, like, ‘Hey we’re going to put you in the queue,’ no problem with me.” This suggests Hendrickson was seeking clarity on his position in the team’s contract negotiation timeline.
Urgency and Team Dynamics
With organized team activities (OTAs) approaching later this month, Hendrickson stressed the urgency of resolving his contract situation. He also noted the impact of Sam Hubbard’s retirement on the defensive line.
“When you have things like OTAs coming and guys like Sam Hubbard, who’s been a tremendous captain for our team last year, that leaves a vacancy for that and I’m excited to fill that, but how do we reach that before we get there,” Hendrickson commented. He underscored the importance of addressing these details proactively, especially with Super Bowl aspirations.
Hendrickson’s Contract Demands
While stating there is no firm deadline to reach an agreement, Hendrickson outlined key factors in his contract considerations.
Chiefly, he seeks long-term security in Cincinnati. “I don’t think I want to play for incentives that will be out of my control,” he explained. “I don’t think I want to play on a short-term contract and see where it goes. I would like to be able to tell my wife, here’s where we’re going to build a family together.” This emphasizes his desire for stability and a long-term commitment from the Bengals.
Bengals’ Stance and “Carl Pickens Clause”
Hendrickson’s performance has been exceptional, recording 17.5 sacks in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. His 57 sacks since 2021 rank third-most in the NFL over the past four years, highlighting his value to the Bengals defense.
As of now, the Cincinnati Bengals have not issued a public response to Hendrickson’s remarks. The team has a history of discouraging public criticism from players.
The “Carl Pickens Clause,” a controversial element in some Bengals player contracts, emerged after receiver Carl Pickens publicly criticized the team in the 1990s. This clause allows the team to potentially recoup signing bonuses from players who publicly criticize the organization. A court decision upheld the clause in 2001.
