Mercedes Kilmer and Joanne Whalley Seen Together After Val Kilmer’s Passing
In a poignant display of family unity, Mercedes Kilmer, daughter of the late actor Val Kilmer, and his former wife, Joanne Whalley, were seen together for the first time following the acclaimed actor’s death at age 65. The beloved Val Kilmer, known for his iconic roles in films like Top Gun, Batman, and The Doors, passed away recently, prompting an outpouring of grief and remembrance.
Mourning in West Hollywood
Mercedes, 33, and Whalley, 63, were photographed sharing a heartfelt embrace outside a residence in West Hollywood. This emotional moment occurred just a day after Mercedes confirmed the news of her father’s death, which was attributed to pneumonia.
Dressed in casual attire, Mercedes wore a black sweatshirt, Ugg boots, and sunglasses. She was observed carrying sizable tote bags as she moved items to her vehicle.
Joanne Whalley wore a long red cardigan over black attire and was seen comforting her daughter, embracing her in a moment of shared sorrow.
A Cinema Icon Remembered
Besides Mercedes, Val Kilmer, a cinematic icon celebrated for his memorable performances in Top Gun, Batman, and The Doors, is also survived by his son, Jack Kilmer, 29.
Kilmer and British actress Joanne Whalley were married from 1988 to 1996. Their relationship began on the set of director Ron Howard’s 1988 fantasy film, Willow.
Val Kilmer’s Dedication to Family
Val Kilmer maintained a close bond with his two children throughout his life. Even during an 11-year battle with throat cancer, which necessitated the use of a voice box and impacted his career, the celebrated actor prioritized spending time with Mercedes and Jack.
This commitment included bringing Mercedes as his guest to the annual Thespians Go Hollywood Gala in 2019, marking his last public appearance.
During the event, the father-daughter duo, who both appeared in the 2020 movie Paydirt, remained close and posed for photographs on the red carpet.
Family First
The versatile performer had previously disclosed to Vanity Fair that he declined opportunities to collaborate with ’10 really great directors’ to prioritize his family and marriage.
‘I can’t be a responsible parent and only be there three or four months a year,’ he explained, highlighting his dedication to fatherhood.
In a 2020 interview with People, he expressed his joy in his children’s company: ‘I am just madly, wildly entertained by them. My only gripe is that I never see them enough, so I never get enough of the wild entertainment that everyone else gets, but they’re really, really, entertaining.’
Mercedes Kilmer on Her Father’s Legacy
Mercedes had previously spoken about growing up with famous parents, revealing to The Hollywood Reporter that navigating public perception was a key aspect of her childhood.
‘It was about navigating how other people perceived us rather than any kind of reckoning,’ she stated in a 2017 interview, reflecting on her unique upbringing.
In 2020, she described her father to People as a ‘good friend’ and ‘a smart and creative person’ whose company she enjoyed, irrespective of their familial connection.
On-Screen Collaboration
In the same year, Mercedes shared the screen with her father in the film Paydirt. Val Kilmer himself had suggested her for the role, believing she would be well-suited for it.
‘Mercedes and the producer met, and they all had a ball,’ he told People, recounting the casting process for their joint project.
Mercedes acknowledged that this acting experience with her father was professionally enriching.
‘It’s obvious my dad’s speech is compromised and so this whole experience revealed the personal effort I had put into working with actors with a disability, which I hadn’t done before,’ she explained, highlighting the learning opportunity.
Mercedes elaborated, ‘It revealed how much I had to gain from working with people who have different abilities. My dad’s able to very artfully circumvent the limitations of his speech, so I learned so much watching him, how he communicated physically. It taught me so much about acting that expanded what I thought acting was, which was central to speech.’
Val Documentary and Cancer Battle
Mercedes also served as an associate producer on the Prime Video documentary Val, released in 2021, offering an intimate look into her father’s life and career.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she admitted the ‘entire movie’ evoked strong emotions in her.
However, she noted that nothing in the film ‘surprised’ her, as she described her father as ‘an open person’ whom she knew ‘very well.’
Val Kilmer’s Health Journey
Val Kilmer received a throat cancer diagnosis in 2014. He underwent surgery, including a tracheotomy, which significantly affected his speaking ability, though he was later declared cancer-free.
Kilmer’s treatment included both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, along with a tracheostomy, a procedure involving creating a surgical opening in the neck to aid breathing.
This procedure unfortunately resulted in permanent damage to his vocal cords, altering his voice permanently.
Despite these challenges, Kilmer announced in 2020 that he had been free of cancer for four years.
A Storied Career
Val Kilmer achieved fame for his role as Iceman in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun and as Batman/Bruce Wayne in 1995’s Batman Forever. Despite his altered voice, he made a notable return to the screen in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role as Iceman alongside Tom Cruise in what became his final film appearance.
The Los Angeles native also famously portrayed musician Jim Morrison in the 1991 movie The Doors, and portrayed Old West figure Doc Holliday in the 1993 film Tombstone.
He experienced further commercial success in 1995, starring in the crime drama Heat with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and taking over the role of Batman in Batman Forever.
Despite his celebrated career, Val Kilmer never received an Oscar or Emmy nomination; however, he did receive a 2012 Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for The Mask of Zorro.
Personal Reflections
In his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, Kilmer revealed he had been single since 2000.
‘I haven’t had a girlfriend in 20 years. The truth is I am lonely part of every day,’ he wrote, offering a glimpse into his personal life.
