Nintendo Switch 2 Naming Decision Revealed: Why Nintendo Opted Against “Super Switch”

The anticipation surrounding the moniker for Nintendo’s next console, now officially known as the Switch 2, reached fever pitch following the initial announcement of a successor to the original Switch. Initial speculation heavily favored the appellation “Super Switch,” drawing parallels to Nintendo’s historical naming patterns observed with the evolution from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Insights from Nintendo Developers on Switch 2’s Name

In a comprehensive interview published on Nintendo’s official website, key developers Kouichi Kawamoto, Takuhiro Dohta, and Tetsuya Sasaki, provided insights into the rationale behind the chosen designation. Kawamoto, from the entertainment planning and development department, alongside senior director Dohta and general manager Sasaki, elaborated on the meticulous selection process.

Extensive Deliberation and the “Super” Prefix

Kawamoto revealed the extensive deliberation process, stating, “We considered numerous names, including options like ‘Super Nintendo Switch.'” He elaborated on why the “Super” prefix was ultimately rejected, pointing to the Super NES as an illustrative example. “The Super NES, unlike the Switch 2, was not backward compatible with games from its predecessor, the NES. Given that the Switch 2 offers compatibility with original Switch titles, mirroring the Super NES naming convention felt inappropriate. While the Switch 2 boasts enhanced capabilities, our primary goal is for players to experience it as Nintendo’s latest innovation, rather than solely focusing on technical specifications.”

The complete interview offers a deeper exploration into all aspects of the Switch 2.
