Family Detention in New York Sparks Outcry

Immigration authorities’ detention of a mother and her three children in upstate New York has generated significant backlash from Governor Kathy Hochul, advocacy organizations, and local education officials. The apprehension by ICE has ignited concerns over the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration enforcement policies, specifically the deportation of non-citizens without judicial proceedings or formal charges.

ICE Detains Family in Sackets Harbor

The New York Immigration Coalition, a nonprofit championing immigrant rights, verified that the family, including a third-grade student, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a dairy farm in Sackets Harbor, New York. According to the coalition, the family was subsequently transferred to the Karnes County Detention Facility in Texas, a distance of approximately 1,800 miles.

Advocacy Group Condemns Detention

Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, issued a statement expressing strong condemnation of the action. “It is appalling that these children and their mother were seized from their residence and essentially disappeared,” Awawdeh stated.

Awawdeh further asserted that the family was “appropriately navigating the immigration system and attending their scheduled immigration court hearings.” He accused the Trump administration and border security official Tom Homan of “acting entirely outside the bounds of the law.”

Official Response Pending

As of yet, neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has offered an official response to requests for comment from NBC News regarding the detention.

Community Rally Planned for Family’s Release

Sackets Harbor, situated in Jefferson County on the shores of Lake Ontario, and located ten miles west of Watertown, is the center of community action. A rally is scheduled to take place in Sackets Harbor on Saturday, organized to demand the immediate release of the detained family.

Detention Linked to Separate Arrest

According to reports from NBC affiliate WPTZ in Plattsburgh, New York, ICE agents conducted a search at the farm last Thursday to apprehend Marcell Meyer, who faces charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse imagery.

The connection between Meyer’s arrest and the family’s detention remains unclear, although initial indications suggest that agents were at the location primarily to locate Meyer.

Details of Arrest and Related Individuals

The U.S. Attorney’s Office disclosed that Meyer, a 43-year-old national from South Africa, allegedly disseminated the illicit images to an undercover Homeland Security Investigations agent posing as a 13-year-old. If convicted, Meyer could face a prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years, a potential fine of $250,000, and lifetime supervision.

WPTZ reported that authorities encountered seven individuals at the time of Meyer’s arrest. These individuals were taken to a nearby border patrol station and processed as “undocumented immigrants.”

Governor Hochul Voices Strong Opposition

Governor Hochul released a statement on Tuesday, expressing her dismay. She noted her past collaborations with various administrations on immigration matters, but stated, “I cannot conceive of any public safety justification for ICE agents to forcibly remove an innocent family, including a third-grade child, from their Sackets Harbor home.”

“This is not the type of immigration enforcement that was assured to the American populace. It is simply inhumane. I insist on the family’s return to New York State and believe ICE must provide immediate accountability for these actions,” she emphasized.

School District Reacts to Student Detentions

Jennifer Gaffney, Superintendent of Sackets Harbor Central School District, informed WPTZ that the students are being held in Texas and that there has been no communication with the family since Thursday. She described the situation as “very distressing.”

In a statement, Gaffney conveyed, “At Sackets Harbor Central School District, we consider ourselves a close-knit community, and currently, some of our members are suffering. We are deeply saddened because three students have been taken away from our school community.”

She further added that the school board is committed to “exhausting all possible avenues in our efforts to ensure their return home.”

School Support for Detained Students

In a communication addressed to the school community, Superintendent Gaffney outlined the availability of counselors and support personnel for students. Educators have been instructed to address the situation openly and truthfully with students and to encourage them to express their support for the family through letter writing.

Community Rally to Include Protest at Official’s Home

The Democratic Committee of Jefferson County, the organizers of Saturday’s rally, announced that participants will also conduct a peaceful march past the residence of Tom Homan, who resides in the vicinity. The Facebook event details clarify that the rally is intended not as an anti-Trump demonstration, but rather as an effort focused on “protecting our children and standing up for families within our communities.”
