Lionsgate has revealed ambitious plans for several new projects, including John Wick 5, which will see the return of Keanu Reeves in the lead role and Chad Stahelski as director, continuing their long-standing association with the franchise. This expansion signals a major commitment to the John Wick cinematic universe, promising fans a wealth of new content in the coming years.
John Wick Chapter 5: Reeves and Stahelski Return
During CinemaCon 2025, as reported by various media outlets, Lionsgate officially verified that John Wick 5 is in active development. Keanu Reeves, synonymous with the role of the formidable assassin, will once again embody Wick. Speculation regarding the return of both Reeves and Stahelski for another sequel has now been put to rest, confirming their central roles in John Wick Chapter 5. The core creative team is reuniting to deliver another installment in the popular action series.
Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate’s motion picture group, emphasized the high creative bar for the returning team, stating, “Keanu, Chad, [and producers] Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something genuinely extraordinary and novel to contribute to these characters and this universe. We are incredibly eager for audiences to witness the next phase of this journey.”
Lionsgate has not yet disclosed a release timeframe or plot details for John Wick 5.
Caine Spin-off Movie: Donnie Yen to Star and Direct
In addition to John Wick 5, the studio also confirmed the development of the much-discussed Caine spin-off. Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, portrayed by martial arts expert, actor, and filmmaker Donnie Yen, will be the focus of his own standalone film. Lionsgate confirmed that Yen will not only reprise his role but will also take on directing and producing duties for this action movie project. Production for the Caine spin-off is slated to commence later this year in Hong Kong.
Animated Prequel: Exploring Young John Wick’s Past
Further expanding the John Wick narrative, Lionsgate unveiled plans for a new animated prequel set before the events of the original John Wick film. This animated spin-off will center on a younger version of Wick, with the intention of having Keanu Reeves voice the character. This mature-audience aimed animated feature will delve into the mystery of the “Impossible Task,” revealing the circumstances and execution of Wick’s legendary feat. The “Impossible Task,” often referenced in the franchise, is understood to involve Wick eliminating numerous powerful figures in a single night to secure his freedom from the assassin world.
