Florida Burglary Suspect Apprehended by Police Dog After Hiding in Tree
A burglary suspect attempting to evade authorities in Florida was apprehended by a police dog after the canine tracked the individual’s scent to a hiding spot high in a tree. The suspect had attempted to conceal himself within the tree’s canopy.
K9 Scout Leads to Suspect’s Discovery
K9 Scout, a decorated police dog, located Gregory Yates Jr. concealed in an evergreen tree. Yates allegedly attempted to burglarize a homeowner’s shed. When law enforcement arrived, he fled into a wooded area, according to the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office.
Suspect’s Camouflage Fails Against Dedicated K9
“The pursuit extended across NE 640 Street and continued North. Scout halted beneath a tree, looked upwards, and identified Yates attempting to blend into the branches,” the sheriff’s office stated on Monday.
“Mr. Yates’ attempt at camouflage was unsuccessful against Scout’s keen senses. Displaying the determination characteristic of a canine officer, Scout effectively encouraged the suspect to descend from his elevated position.”
Accomplice Apprehended at Scene
Yates was taken into custody. Nicole Hillesland, identified as his alleged accomplice, was also apprehended. She was found near the scene of the alleged crime when law enforcement arrived.
Charges Filed Against Both Suspects
The pair was booked into the Dixie County Jail in Cross City, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both Yates and Hillesland face charges of burglary of a structure and possession of burglary tools.
