After Briefly Disappearing, TikTok Went Back to Normal. Or Did It?

TikTok Ban Uncertainty Creates Unease Among Users and Content Creators

A temporary ban on TikTok sparked a wave of reactions ranging from humor to dismay among its vast user base in January. When a Supreme Court ruling briefly prohibited the popular social media platform, roughly 170 million Americans confronted the prospect of a digital landscape devoid of the video-sharing app. For a fleeting period, jokes circulated, despair surfaced, and some users even staged mock online farewells.

Brief Outage and Algorithm Reset Concerns

However, after approximately 14 hours, TikTok’s service was restored, postponing widespread shifts to alternative platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube, and relegating short-lived competitors such as Red Note to obscurity. Though functionality returned, many users reported a lingering sense of disruption. Brielle Asero, a content creator based in New York City, observed what she believed was an algorithm “reset” following the brief service interruption.

“It felt like I had just downloaded TikTok for the first time,” Asero stated, “and the ‘For You Page’ was displaying entirely random videos, completely irrelevant to my viewing preferences.”

Lingering Algorithm Issues and User Anxiety

Ms. Asero, 22, noted that while her algorithm seemed to readjust in the following weeks, the initial shift left her with a sense of unease. Similar sentiments were echoed by other users as the platform operated in a state of uncertainty for months, leading up to an April 5th deadline for TikTok to secure a new American ownership or potentially face another shutdown in the United States. Amidst this, reports emerged of Amazon expressing interest with a last-minute acquisition bid.

During this ambiguous interim, some users indicated that their “For You Page” (FYP) curation – the core of TikTok’s appeal, known for its remarkably precise content delivery algorithm – appeared less finely tuned than before the short-lived ban. Others expressed worries that their content was not achieving the same level of viewership as it had prior to the January disruption.

Broader Concerns and the “Vibes are Off”

More significantly, a prevalent anxiety emerged among many users regarding the platform’s precarious future. There was a persistent fear that TikTok could disappear again abruptly, potentially erasing their carefully cultivated online communities and jeopardizing their sources of income.

In simpler terms, users described a palpable shift in the platform’s general atmosphere, stating: “The vibes are off.”

TikTok did not offer an immediate response to requests for comments for this article. However, in January, the company informed Reuters that neither its policies nor its algorithms underwent any modifications during the period of the outage.

Divergent User Experiences and Political Content

Lauren Wootton, a 23-year-old bartender from Houston, voiced skepticism regarding TikTok’s statement. “I hesitate to sound conspiratorial, but I genuinely believe something changed with the app and my ‘For You Page’,” she stated.

Wootton elaborated, “I’m not a supporter of Trump, yet my FYP was flooded with pro-Trump content. I found this very strange because typically your ‘For You Page’ is shaped by your preferences and accounts you follow. I have never engaged with content of that nature, so it struck me as extremely peculiar.”

While TikTok refrained from commenting on political content circulation following the January ban, an internal analysis conducted by TikTok in the preceding year, during the unfolding 2024 presidential race, revealed a significantly higher volume of pro-Trump content compared to pro-Biden content on the platform.

Content Creator Viewership Declines

Ms. Asero, who boasts over 690,000 followers on TikTok, also reported a decline in the reach of her videos in recent times.

“Immediately after the service resumed, I noticed a dramatic decrease in my video views,” she explained. “Despite having nearly 700,000 followers, some of my videos are struggling to surpass 4,000 views, which was not an issue before the ban.”

Calls for Resolution and Uncertainty Fatigue

Ms. Asero characterized the preceding months on TikTok as an “emotional roller coaster.” Regardless of TikTok’s fate this month, she expressed a desire for a definitive resolution to the ongoing uncertainty.

Jeff Guenther, a therapist with a prominent TikTok presence, echoed Ms. Asero’s appeal for a final decision, emphasizing that the anticipation of another deadline had fostered an unusual atmosphere on the platform.

“It’s a peculiar, in-between state characterized by ambiguity,” Mr. Guenther, residing in Portland, Oregon, observed. “We are attempting to proceed as usual, but it feels like you’re at the dinner table after your parents have argued, and you’re just trying to eat and act normal to avoid further disruptions.”

Impact on Content Creation and User Motivation

The seemingly subdued environment on the app may partly stem from users’ hesitance to invest significant effort in creating top-tier content for a platform facing potential disappearance, notwithstanding assurances from President Trump.

Dori Boyd, a stay-at-home mother and parenting influencer with a smaller following, indicated a diminished drive to actively expand her presence on a platform with an uncertain lifespan.

“Why should I dedicate substantial time and energy to something that might be taken away imminently?” questioned Ms. Boyd, 29, a resident of West Point, New York.

“I don’t believe users are producing their best content, nor do I think they are putting in their maximum effort,” Mr. Guenther concurred, “possibly because there is reluctance to invest in something that might soon vanish.”

Some Users Driven by Looming Ban

However, not all users have been discouraged by the platform’s uncertain status.

Ms. Wootton, the bartender from Texas, stated that the impending ban has motivated her to prioritize rapid audience growth.

Her aim, she explained, is to ensure her followers can locate her on other social media platforms should TikTok become unavailable.
