Survey Highlights Women’s Priorities Beyond Gender Equity in Sports During Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the continued pursuit of gender equality and the welfare of women. Amidst ongoing discussions about women’s issues in U.S. politics, new survey data reveals a potentially surprising perspective. According to a recent poll, approximately one-third of women (34%) indicated that they do not perceive gender equality issues as pressing concerns in their daily lives, even as stress levels reportedly rise among women across the nation.

A Censuswide survey, involving over 2,000 adults (aged 21 and above) and commissioned by Northerner.com, indicated that in 2023, a small fraction of women identified gender equity in sports as a critical matter. These results suggest that women are focused on other, more immediate aspects of their lives.

Generational Divide in Women’s Priorities

While public discourse often emphasizes gender issues from various viewpoints, this survey suggests a more complex reality, marked by a generational difference in what women prioritize. Younger women, aged 21-24, expressed the highest level of concern regarding reproductive rights and access to care (48%). In contrast, older women, aged 55 and above, were most inclined to report no urgent gender-related concerns (45%).

Gender Equity in Sports: Not a Primary Concern for Most Women

Despite significant media coverage and political debate surrounding gender equity in sports, fewer than 9% of female respondents considered it a major issue in their personal lives. This finding may imply that broader cultural debates are not necessarily impacting everyday concerns. Alternatively, the survey responses might indicate that other factors take precedence for women. These include:

  • Safety from violence and harassment
  • Mental health support
  • Reproductive rights and access to healthcare
  • Representation in leadership and politics
  • Maternal health and well-being
  • Access to affordable childcare

These areas appear to be of greater importance in their daily experiences. Among the women who did acknowledge gender disparities, 26% cited equal pay and workplace equity as their foremost concerns. This aligns with existing research highlighting the gender wage gap. Studies indicate that women earn 84 cents for every dollar earned by men, a disparity that exists across various professions, including those predominantly held by women. According to a report from IWPR last year, women’s earnings were lower than men’s for full-time work across all 20 of the largest occupations for both women and men.

Expert Perspective on Women’s Stress and Coping Mechanisms

“Women have historically navigated demanding environments and societal pressures, creating distinctive behavioral patterns,” stated Dr. Marina Murphy, Senior Director of Scientific Affairs at Northerner.com. “Research indicates that women effectively seek social support and rely on close relationships during stressful periods. However, it is understandable that stress can also contribute to unhealthy habits, such as smoking. This natural response to stress underscores the importance of having accessible alternatives, like nicotine pouches, which can deliver nicotine without the harmful effects of inhaling cigarette smoke.”

Shifting Perspectives on Gender Equality

The survey data regarding women’s pressing concerns could reflect societal progress or indicate an evolving landscape for the gender equality movement in the U.S. Regardless, women from diverse states, socioeconomic backgrounds, and racial identities have varied experiences and priorities. As we observe Women’s History Month, it is crucial to focus on the reported realities of women rather than solely relying on prevailing narratives.
