ZeniMax Workers Union Authorizes Strike Amid Contract Disputes
Quality assurance testers at ZeniMax Media, operating under the banner of ZeniMax Workers United, have voted to authorize a strike, signaling potential labor unrest. The union, representing over 300 workers across Texas and Maryland, secured overwhelming support for the action, with over 94 percent of members voting in favor. This strike authorization comes amidst ongoing contract negotiations with parent company Microsoft, which have now stretched into their second year.
Strike Vote Does Not Immediately Trigger Walkout
While the vote grants the union the power to initiate a strike, it does not signify an immediate work stoppage. Unlike the current strike action involving SAG-AFTRA and video game voice actors, ZeniMax Workers United members are not currently on strike. However, the overwhelming authorization vote provides the union with significant leverage and the option to call for a strike should negotiations with Microsoft reach an impasse.
Escalation in Labor Tensions
This strike authorization marks a further escalation in tensions between the unionized workers and Microsoft management. Last year, ZeniMax Workers United staged a one-day walkout to protest Microsoft’s handling of return-to-office policies and outsourcing concerns. These issues, alongside demands for improved compensation and benefits, remain central points of contention in the ongoing contract talks.
Worker Concerns Highlighted
Aubrey Litchfield, an associate QA tester, articulated the workers’ grievances in a press release accompanying the strike authorization announcement. Litchfield stated, “Our in-house contractors have been toiling for minimal wages without essential benefits, including paid sick leave. The precarious financial situations created by this uncertainty are impacting life decisions, with workers hesitant to start families. Despite successfully launching multiple game titles while working remotely, our concerns remain unaddressed. We are asking, when will enough be enough?”
Microsoft’s Response Sought
Media outlets have contacted Microsoft for an official statement regarding the strike authorization vote and the ongoing contract negotiations. As of yet, a public response has not been issued.
ZeniMax Workers United and the Broader Unionization Trend
ZeniMax Workers United is part of a growing wave of unionization within Microsoft and the broader video game industry. Formed in 2023, it initially stood as the largest union within Microsoft, boasting 300 members. However, Activision Quality Assurance United has since surpassed it in size, representing roughly 600 quality assurance professionals following its organization last year.
Industry-Wide Unionization Efforts
The trend of unionization in the video game sector is further underscored by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) announcement at GDC 2025. The CWA unveiled the United Videogame Workers, a national union welcoming all workers across the video game industry to join its ranks, signaling a potentially significant shift in labor representation within the gaming world.
