Tragic Death of Tourist in Boracay: Slovak Woman Murdered

Boracay, Philippines – A female tourist has tragically died after allegedly being raped and murdered at a resort in the Philippines. The incident occurred after the victim attended a wedding on the island paradise. Michaela Mickova, a 23-year-old Slovak national residing in Berlin, Germany, had traveled to Boracay to celebrate a friend’s wedding on March 8th. Just two days later, she suddenly went missing, sparking a search.

Details of Disappearance and Discovery

Mickova was last seen around 1:00 PM, wearing a red top and green hat, authorities reported. A missing person’s poster was circulated by police, offering a reward of £670 for information leading to her whereabouts. Sadly, Michaela’s body was discovered on March 12th. She was found deceased, partially unclothed, in an abandoned chapel on the popular Philippines island.

Horrific Crime and Arrests

Friends described the event as a “horrific crime.” According to local news outlets, a coroner’s report indicated that Michaela was raped and suffered fatal blunt force trauma. Law enforcement has taken three men into custody. The arrests began with a 28-year-old man apprehended during a drug raid. According to the Philippine Star, while detained, this individual implicated two accomplices in the crime.

Alleged Account of the Attack

Reports suggest the men encountered Michaela as she was taking photographs on the night of her death. The suspects allegedly assaulted her, rendering her unconscious with a piece of lumber. They then purportedly dragged her to the derelict chapel, where the sexual assault took place, before leaving to consume alcoholic beverages together.

Community Mourns and Seeks Justice

A friend of Michaela’s has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to collect funds to repatriate her remains to Slovakia and to assist with funeral expenses. Donations have already exceeded £3,700, demonstrating widespread support.

In a heartfelt tribute, the friend stated, “Michaela lived and worked in Berlin, Germany, and as a caregiver, she provided significant charity, support, joy, and her smile to many individuals. She will be profoundly missed.”

The friend added, “My only wish is that my dear friend were still alive, but she has been taken from us permanently. I want to support her family through this donation appeal. I hope the investigation concludes swiftly, allowing Michaela to be laid to rest in her hometown, enabling us to bid farewell and for her to find peace, and for justice to be served.”

Tourism Concerns in Boracay

Officials in Boracay are expressing concerns that this brutal killing could deter tourism to the region. “This incident is a devastating setback for our tourism sector. We must reassure visitors that Boracay remains a secure destination,” a police spokesperson conveyed to local media.

The official further stated, “We will exert every effort, in cooperation with local authorities in Boracay and Malay, and relevant national agencies, to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”

Department of Tourism Statement

The Department of Tourism (DoT) released a statement addressing the tragedy: “The DoT expresses its deepest concern regarding the recent incident involving a Slovak tourist on Boracay Island. Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragic event.”
