ChatGPT’s Enhanced Image Generation Tool Sparks Deepfake Concerns with Realistic Fake Receipts

OpenAI’s latest artificial intelligence model, ChatGPT 4o, has introduced a novel image generator showcasing significant advancements in embedding text within generated visuals. This new feature, while impressive, has swiftly raised concerns about its potential misuse, particularly in the creation of fraudulent documents like fabricated restaurant receipts, adding a potent instrument to the arsenal of AI deepfake technologies exploited by scammers.

AI-Generated Receipts Raise Alarm Bells

Deedy Das, a prominent social media user and venture capitalist, demonstrated the capability of ChatGPT 4o by posting on X an image of a counterfeit receipt from a well-known San Francisco steakhouse. He asserted that this convincing forgery was produced using the new AI model, highlighting the ease with which realistic fake documents can now be created.

Replicating Realistic Forgeries

Following Das’s demonstration, other users successfully replicated similar results, showcasing the tool’s capacity to generate increasingly authentic-looking fake receipts. One user even added simulated food and drink stains to enhance the believability of the AI-produced receipt.

TechCrunch’s Investigation and Findings

TechCrunch’s own investigation revealed what appeared to be an even more persuasive example originating from France. A LinkedIn user shared a crumpled, AI-generated receipt purportedly from a local restaurant chain, further illustrating the tool’s potential for creating deceptive visuals.

Testing ChatGPT 4o’s Receipt Generation

To assess the capabilities firsthand, TechCrunch experimented with ChatGPT 4o, successfully generating a fake receipt for an Applebee’s restaurant in San Francisco.

Limitations and Potential for Improvement

Despite generating a receipt, TechCrunch’s attempt revealed some telltale signs of fabrication. Notably, the total value used a comma instead of a decimal point, and the itemized amounts did not accurately sum up to the stated total. These discrepancies highlight that large language models (LLMs) still encounter challenges with basic arithmetic, a known limitation.

However, the article notes that these minor inaccuracies could be easily rectified by someone with fraudulent intent. Simple photo editing software or more refined prompts to the AI could quickly address these numerical errors, resulting in a more convincing fake.

Fraud Concerns and OpenAI’s Response

The ease with which convincing fake receipts can be generated raises serious concerns about the potential for widespread fraud. The technology could be readily exploited by malicious actors seeking unjustified reimbursements for fictitious expenses.

OpenAI’s Stance on Misuse

Taya Christianson, a spokesperson for OpenAI, stated to TechCrunch that all images produced by ChatGPT include metadata indicating their AI origin. She added that OpenAI enforces its usage policies, which prohibit fraudulent activities, and actively learns from real-world user interactions and feedback to improve its systems.

Balancing Creative Freedom with Ethical Concerns

When questioned about why ChatGPT permits the generation of fake receipts, given OpenAI’s anti-fraud policies, Christianson explained that their objective is to provide users with broad creative freedom. She argued that AI-generated fake receipts could have legitimate, non-fraudulent applications, such as in financial literacy education, artistic endeavors, and creating advertisements.
