Body of Final Missing US Soldier Recovered in Lithuania

The fourth and final body of a US soldier who disappeared a week prior in Lithuania has been located. The service member was part of a team of four involved in military exercises operating an armored vehicle near Pabrade when they went missing.

Recovery of Vehicle and Service Members

The M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicle, along with the remains of the other three soldiers, was discovered in a peat bog the previous Monday. A significant multinational search and recovery operation ensued, involving hundreds of personnel.

Extensive Multinational Recovery Effort

The complex search and subsequent extraction of the heavy vehicle from the bog involved a large contingent of rescue workers. Participants included personnel from the US Army and Navy, as well as allied forces from Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia, according to an official statement.

Statements on the Tragedy

Major General Christopher Norrie expressed the profound impact of the loss in a statement released by US Army Europe and Africa. “This past week has been devastating. Today our hearts bear the weight of an unbearable pain… the world is darker without them,” he stated.

Lieutenant General Charles Costanza characterized the event as a “tragic accident.” He further remarked on the collaborative spirit of the recovery teams, noting it was “humbling to watch the incredible recovery team from different commands, countries and continents come together.”

Investigation into the Incident

The US Army is currently conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Location and Vehicle Details

The statement did not disclose the specific location where the final soldier’s body was found, but the team had been operating in an area close to the border with Belarus. The M88A2 Hercules is a substantial military vehicle utilized by the US Armed Forces primarily for the recovery of disabled tanks and other vehicles from combat zones.

Challenging Vehicle Extraction

Retrieving the submerged vehicle required the assistance of two additional M88A2 Hercules vehicles and bulldozers. The statement detailed that the recovery mission, which successfully extracted the vehicle from the swamp on Monday, involved teams working “day and night.”

Operation Atlantic Resolve

The identities of the soldiers have not been released publicly. They were deployed to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a mission initiated in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, aimed at bolstering NATO’s eastern flank.
