The year 2023 proved to be exceptionally challenging for Mortimer’s health. He grappled with cardiac issues, rheumatoid arthritis, and shingles. During the triple bypass surgery, the Gone Fishing star’s heart ceased functioning for 32 minutes after surgeons administered potassium.

Mortimer recounted his near-death experience during the surgery: “I distinctly remember traveling toward a light at the end of a tunnel. I felt an unparalleled happiness, an extraordinary sensation. Then, I awoke a day later, feeling well. My initial thought was, ‘This is remarkable. The fear of death has vanished from me.’”

However, Mortimer acknowledged the explanations offered by others regarding his vision. “Many individuals contacted me, suggesting that my body released a chemical, PCT, to cope with the trauma, inducing these hallucinations,” he said. “This explanation did bring a degree of disappointment.”

Detailing the experience, Mortimer described, “It was truly wondrous. I was within a tunnel – resembling a perfectly sculpted hedge – with a radiant light at its furthest point. I was eager to reach it, anticipating an overwhelmingly positive sensation.”

Doctors had warned Mortimer that 95% of his arteries were blocked, raising the imminent risk of a heart attack, possibly even while performing. On the very day he was admitted to the hospital for the critical surgery, Mortimer married his long-term partner, Lisa Matthews, in anticipation of a potentially unfavorable outcome.
