Saka Returns from Injury to Score in Arsenal’s Victory Over Fulham

Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory against Fulham, with Bukayo Saka marking his comeback from injury with a goal. The winger, returning after 101 days sidelined with a hamstring issue, headed in the decisive second goal eight minutes after replacing Ethan Nwaneri in the 66th minute. This Premier League fixture served as crucial preparation for a significant week ahead for Arsenal, as they gear up for their Champions League quarter-final.

Nwaneri and Merino Shine

Ethan Nwaneri delivered a standout performance, providing the assist for Mikel Merino’s opening goal. Merino, deployed once more in a makeshift striker role, capitalized on a deflection in the 37th minute to give Arsenal a deserved 1-0 advantage at the interval. While Rodrigo Muniz scored late for Fulham, it proved merely a consolation as Arsenal maintained control for a comfortable home win.

Gabriel Injury Concerns

However, the win was tempered by concern as defender Gabriel exited the match with a suspected hamstring injury. This setback casts a shadow over Arsenal’s preparations for their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium in the coming week.

Arsenal Player Ratings

David Raya – 6/10

Largely untroubled throughout the match, Raya had minimal action. Fulham’s attack was subdued for extended periods, with their first shot on target arriving in the 52nd minute. Raya was tested only twice more, including Muniz’s late goal.

Jurrien Timber – 7/10

Timber’s precise pass behind Antonee Robinson unlocked the Fulham defense, initiating the attack for Arsenal’s opening goal. His well-weighted ball found Nwaneri, who then assisted Merino.

There was a moment of concern when Timber appeared to be limping towards the end of the first half. Despite a cut on his knee, the Dutchman continued until the 77th minute before being substituted, possibly as a precaution.

William Saliba – 7/10

Saliba faced a physical battle against Raul Jimenez but effectively contained the Fulham striker. The French defender demonstrated impressive accuracy in his distribution from Arsenal’s defensive line.

Gabriel – N/A

Gabriel’s match was cut short after just 15 minutes when he pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury. This presents a significant worry for manager Mikel Arteta ahead of the crucial Champions League fixture against Real Madrid. The central defender displayed clear discomfort as he left the pitch.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 6/10

Lewis-Skelly’s agility and low center of gravity proved valuable in maneuvering out of tight situations on several occasions. It was another assured performance from the young England international.

Thomas Partey – 7/10

Partey provided excellent defensive cover for the backline, allowing Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard greater freedom to operate in advanced positions.

Declan Rice – 6/10

Rice worked diligently to penetrate Fulham’s organized defense, but on this occasion, the attacking trio of Arsenal players ultimately proved more decisive in breaking the deadlock.

Martin Odegaard – 6/10

The Arsenal captain experienced a quieter game by his standards. Fulham effectively congested the central areas, limiting his influence, but this tactical approach inadvertently created more opportunities for Arsenal’s wide players.

Ethan Nwaneri – 8/10

Nwaneri continues to impress with his every touch. The 17-year-old’s intelligent movement led to Timber finding him in space, and his subsequent first-time pass located Merino in a dangerous position inside the penalty area. Nwaneri showcased several moments of quality and is expected to feature regularly despite Saka’s return to fitness.

Mikel Merino – 8/10

Merino still had work to do when he received Nwaneri’s cut-back, skillfully controlling the ball to create space before his shot, aided by a deflection, found the net. The Spaniard has now scored five goals in eight matches since transitioning to a forward role and could remain in that position for the remainder of the season, given injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. Merino’s overall contribution was highly effective.

Gabriel Martinelli – 8/10

Martinelli consistently outperformed Timothy Castagne throughout the match, creating five scoring opportunities, the final one of which resulted in Saka’s goal. Arsenal will be looking for Martinelli to maintain this level of performance moving forward.

Substitutes

Jakub Kiwior – 6/10

Fulham posed more of an attacking threat in the second half, but Kiwior effectively managed the increased pressure. He may be called upon to start against Real Madrid if Gabriel’s injury proves serious.

Bukayo Saka – 7/10

Saka enjoyed a memorable return to action, scoring shortly after entering the pitch to a standing ovation in the 66th minute. The winger headed home Martinelli’s flick-on, extending Arsenal’s lead to 2-0.

Leandro Trossard – N/A

Trossard had limited impact after replacing Timber in the 77th minute.
