Open Ledger Launches PokéTax: A Gamified Approach to Tax Filing
Tax season has become unexpectedly engaging with the introduction of PokéTax, a novel tax software game unveiled by accounting software firm Open Ledger. This innovative product aims to inject fun into the typically tedious chore of tax filing, transforming the complex process into an interactive game just in time for the tax deadline.
Gameplay and Features of PokéTax
PokéTax replaces standard tax forms with an engaging game format. Users are cast as Tax Trainers who encounter “gym leaders” – known as Tax Trainers within the game – each representing a distinct section of a tax form. These sections include income, deductions, and credits. Players navigate the game by answering questions posed by these leaders, effectively completing their tax forms through gameplay.
Seamless Transition to IRS Filing
“Upon completion of your PokéTax session, the game seamlessly directs you to the IRS Direct File website for official submission,” explained Pryce Adade-Yebesi, co-founder of Open Ledger, in a statement. He confirmed that PokéTax is based on the open-source Pokémon game, Pokémon Showdown, and firmly stated that this product launch is not an April Fool’s prank.
“This is a legitimate and functional tool,” Adade-Yebesi emphasized. “Tax fraud is a serious issue, as are interactions with the IRS.”
The Genesis of PokéTax
Open Ledger, co-founded by Adade-Yebesi and Ashtyn Bell, was established earlier this year and secured $3 million in funding, led by Kindred Ventures and Black Ventures. Adade-Yebesi recounted that the open-source game originated as an internal project, initially conceived as a lighthearted experiment. His team questioned, “Could we actually make this work?” The affirmative outcome led to the public release of PokéTax.
AI Assistance and Gamified Learning
PokéTax incorporates an AI assistant to organize user responses effectively. As players progress and successfully challenge Tax Trainers, they earn badges, symbolizing the discovery of new deductions and tax insights.
Making Taxes Engaging
Traditionally, taxes are viewed as an unpopular civic duty, rarely considered as a subject for gamification. A notable exception was the 2023 release of Tax Heaven 3000, a dating simulator-style game where users interacted with an avatar named Iris to complete tax forms for the 2022 tax year. However, Tax Heaven 3000 was a limited-time offering for that specific tax season.
Aiming for a Less Taxing Experience
Adade-Yebesi expresses his aspiration that integrating elements of enjoyment into financial procedures, like tax preparation, will enhance user engagement and mitigate the often-reported drudgery associated with these tasks.
Tax Deadline Reminder
The deadline for tax submissions is April 15.
