Tragedy in Costa Rica: Carbon Monoxide Suspected in Death of Brett Gardner’s Son, Miller Gardner

Costa Rican authorities are investigating carbon monoxide poisoning as a potential cause of death for Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. The teenager tragically passed away on March 21 while vacationing with his family at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Costa Rica. Initial theories of food poisoning have been dismissed as investigators now focus on high levels of carbon monoxide found in the family’s hotel room.

Investigation Points to Hotel Room Contamination

Randall Zúñiga, general director of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigations Agency (OIJ), announced in a press conference Monday that an investigation conducted on Friday revealed ‘significant carbon monoxide contamination’ within the Gardner family’s accommodations. Zúñiga suggested a nearby ‘specialized machine room’ as a possible source of the hazardous gas leak.

‘It’s also important to note that next to [the family’s] room there is a specialized machine room, from which it is believed some form of contamination may have reached the guest rooms, potentially causing the incident,’ Zúñiga stated.

While carbon monoxide poisoning is strongly suspected, authorities are awaiting final toxicology results to officially determine the cause of death. The ongoing inquiry involves collaboration with the FBI in the United States.

Perilous Levels of Carbon Monoxide Detected

According to Zúñiga, the inspection by a dangerous gases investigative team uncovered alarmingly high carbon monoxide concentrations. ‘Nevertheless, the initial investigative findings indicate that the incident was due to this contamination, with levels as high as 600 parts per million detected — when the appropriate level in this case should be zero,’ he explained.

The OIJ has alerted the local Fire Department and Ministry of Health to address the confirmed contamination within the hotel room and implement necessary safety measures.

Similar Incidents Highlight Carbon Monoxide Risks

This heartbreaking incident follows a recent tragedy in Belize, where three American tourists perished due to carbon monoxide poisoning at a resort. Toxicology reports confirmed that Kaoutar Naqqad, 23, Imane Mallah, 24, and Wafae El Arar, 26, died from fatal carbon monoxide exposure, resulting in acute pulmonary edema.

Sudden Illness Preceded Tragedy

Miller Gardner’s sudden death occurred after he and his family experienced severe gastrointestinal distress. Brett, Jessica, Miller, and his 16-year-old brother Hunter reportedly suffered from stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea following dinner at a local restaurant the previous evening.

Medical personnel were urgently summoned to the resort on March 21 after Miller was discovered unresponsive in his room. Despite extensive efforts to revive him, the 14-year-old could not be saved.

Family Mourns Loss, Honors Miller’s Memory

In a touching obituary released Monday, Brett and Jessica Gardner shared a heartfelt tribute to their beloved son. ‘The void Miller’s passing leaves in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and others will be felt for years,’ they wrote.

The Gardner family emphasized the cherished memories created with Miller and announced plans to honor his life by supporting other children through donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

‘Miller was so blessed with experiences and friendships in his 14 years, and he would want other children to have the opportunity to create their own wonderful memories,’ the obituary stated.

Community Remembers Miller’s Vibrant Life

The family’s statement also highlighted Miller’s active involvement in school and local sports. He participated in middle school football and junior varsity baseball, achieved Honor Roll recognition, and enjoyed hobbies such as golf, fishing, hunting, dirt biking, and travel.

‘In this time of unimaginable loss, the family prays that joy and healing will come to others who share their grief,’ the obituary concluded.

A private memorial service for Miller will be held for family members and close friends at a later date.

Autopsy Results Delayed Amid National Crisis

Initial reports indicated that the complete autopsy results could be delayed by approximately two months due to a surge in homicides linked to drug gang violence in Costa Rica, causing a significant backlog in forensic examinations.

Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia from the Judicial Investigations Agency explained, ‘We’re having a hike in homicides as these drug gangs battle for territory and every one of them needs an autopsy… I can confirm that an autopsy has been carried out on Miller, But the full analysis and results, as in every one of them, will take at least two to three months due to these constant killings causing a backlog of cases. That’s the reality.’

Earlier Medical Scrutiny and Potential Causes

Prior to the carbon monoxide investigation, medical experts explored various potential causes for Miller’s death, including adverse reactions to medication administered for their initial illness, or a pre-existing bacterial infection.

Yankees Organization Pays Tribute

Brett Gardner, who dedicated his 14-year Major League Baseball career to the Yankees and contributed to their 2009 World Series victory, received a moving tribute from the organization following the tragedy. Before their Opening Day game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Yankees held a moment of silence in Miller’s honor.

Stadium announcer Paul Olden eulogized Miller, acknowledging his ‘outgoing and feisty personality and warm and loving nature.’ Players from both teams joined in a display of respect as Miller’s photograph was displayed on the stadium’s large screen.

‘Miller had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature,’ Olden shared with the crowd. ‘Miller grew up in the Yankees organization and had become a two-sport athlete, wearing his father’s No. 11 on his football jersey.’

He concluded, ‘The entire Yankees organization grieves this unimaginable loss with Brett, his wife Jessica, and their son Hunter.’

Aaron Judge and Yankees Community Offer Support

Yankees captain Aaron Judge expressed his deep sympathy and support for his former teammate, noting the widespread impact Gardner had on the organization. ‘This guy was a leader of all of us, a second dad to some guys,’ Judge reflected. ‘He poured everything into every single guy.’
