Amazon Launches Upgraded Alexa+ Service with Initial Feature Limitations
Amazon has officially launched its anticipated upgraded Alexa experience, known as Alexa+, meeting its stated goal of a March release for the enhanced AI assistant. However, early reports indicate that the service debuts with fewer functionalities than were presented during a media event in late February. The initial version of Alexa+, Amazon’s enhanced AI assistant, appears to be a somewhat scaled-back launch compared to the publicized demonstrations of its advanced capabilities.
Limited Features at Launch
Agentic AI Capabilities Missing
The Washington Post reports that Alexa+ currently lacks the ability to perform certain “agentic” artificial intelligence tasks that Amazon showcased in its promotional materials. These unfulfilled capabilities include features like placing takeout orders via Grubhub and generating imaginative stories for children’s entertainment.
Additional Capabilities Not Yet Available
Furthermore, the enhanced digital assistant is unable to visually identify individuals and issue reminders about specific chores, nor can it provide brainstorming support for gift ideas. These were additional functions demonstrated during the February press event but are absent from the initial release of Alexa+.
Staggered Rollout for Select Features
Amazon is implementing a phased rollout for certain features, restricting initial access to a limited segment of users. Among the functionalities with restricted early availability are the ability to request rides through Uber and receive personalized cooking recommendations.
Web App Launch Date Uncertain
Adding to the limited feature set at launch, the release timeframe for a dedicated web application for Alexa+, which Amazon announced last month, remains unspecified. A concrete release date for the Alexa+ web app has not been communicated.
Underlying AI Infrastructure Challenges
Sources suggest that the development of Alexa+ has encountered persistent difficulties, primarily stemming from complexities within the underlying AI infrastructure. According to reporting, these infrastructure challenges may be contributing to the reduced feature set available at the initial launch of the upgraded Alexa service, and indicate ongoing development may be necessary for Alexa+ to reach its full potential.
