Sheffield Wednesday Players Face Salary Delays Amid Financial Concerns

Championship club Sheffield Wednesday has encountered a setback, failing to remit player salaries for March due to reported cash flow issues. The club acknowledged the delay, attributing it to temporary financial constraints.

Club Statement on Unpaid Wages

In an official statement, Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the salary delays, stating: “Sheffield Wednesday can confirm a temporary issue with the payment of player salaries for the month of March. This has occurred as a result of significant sums of money owed to the chairman’s businesses which has in turn impacted on the club’s immediate cashflow.”

The statement further indicated that chairman Dejphon Chansiri is actively working to address the situation and expressed gratitude for patience and understanding.

Chairman’s Efforts to Resolve Issue

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri, who leads the consortium that acquired Sheffield Wednesday in 2015, is reportedly taking steps to rectify the unpaid wages situation. The club characterized the payment delay as a transient matter.

Recurring Financial Challenges

This incident marks another instance of financial difficulties at Sheffield Wednesday during Chansiri‘s tenure. Previous financial concerns include:

  • Late player payments in the past.
  • Stadium sale: In July 2019, Hillsborough Stadium was sold to Chansiri for approximately £60m to comply with spending regulations.
  • Fan appeal for funds: In October 2023, Chansiri appealed to supporters to raise £2m to settle a debt with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and cover wage expenses.
  • EFL embargo: Last November, the English Football League (EFL) imposed a registration embargo on Wednesday due to outstanding amounts owed to HMRC.

Current Championship Standing

Sheffield Wednesday currently occupies 12th position in the Championship league table, trailing the playoff spots by five points. Their next fixture is at home against Hull City on Saturday.
