Webb explains, “Mushrooms possess a naturally high water content, approximately 80 to 90 percent. This inherent moisture makes them particularly susceptible to becoming slimy if stored incorrectly.”
He further clarifies, “The secret to preserving their freshness lies in achieving a delicate equilibrium of moisture while ensuring they remain dry. Washing them before storage elevates the risk of diminishing their usable lifespan. Instead, cleanse them immediately prior to culinary preparation.”
The Paper Bag Method: A Simple Storage Solution
According to Webb, the most effective method for storing mushrooms is remarkably straightforward: utilizing a paper bag. “Position whole, unwashed mushrooms within a brown paper bag and securely fold the top to seal it,” he advises.
