Helen Mirren Voices Criticism of James Bond Franchise, Cites “Profound Sexism”
Acclaimed actress Helen Mirren has expressed reservations about the James Bond film series, labeling it as exhibiting “profound sexism.” However, the Oscar-winning performer also stated her belief that the iconic 007 agent should not be reimagined as a woman. Mirren’s remarks come amidst ongoing discussions regarding the future direction of the James Bond franchise, particularly following recent shifts in studio control.
Mirren Discusses Bond and Brosnan in New Interview
Mirren, 79, shared her perspective on the famed fictional spy during an interview promoting her latest television project, “MobLand.” In the series, she stars alongside Pierce Brosnan, 71, who himself portrayed James Bond in four films released between 1995 and 2002.
“I must confess, I was never a devoted admirer of Bond,” Mirren revealed to the Standard. “I am, however, a tremendous fan of Pierce Brosnan – a truly massive fan. He is simply fantastic.”
She elaborated on her admiration for Brosnan and his contemporaries in the role, stating, “Obviously, he is incredibly handsome and all of that, and I believe he is wonderful in ‘MobLand.’ Furthermore, he is genuinely one of the most delightful individuals you could ever have the pleasure of collaborating with. The same is true of Daniel Craig, whom I have met and know to a degree. Again, a very kind and gracious person.”
Concerns Over Representation of Women in Bond Films
Despite her appreciation for the actors who have embodied Bond, Mirren voiced discomfort regarding the film series’ portrayal of women.
“The entire James Bond saga, it simply wasn’t for me,” she explained. “Truly, it wasn’t. I never gravitated towards James Bond. I was never comfortable with how women were depicted in James Bond films.”
Mirren Opposes Gender-Swapped 007, Suggests Focus on Real Female Spies
Explaining her stance against the idea of a female 007 agent, Mirren asserted, “The core essence of James Bond is steeped in and originates from deep-seated sexism.”
Instead of altering the gender of the renowned British secret agent, Mirren proposed that filmmakers should instead create narratives centered on the experiences of genuine female spies.
“Women have consistently played a crucial and remarkably significant role within the Secret Service – this has always been the case. And they have demonstrated immense bravery,” the star of “1923” emphasized. “If you examine the contributions of women in the French Resistance, their courage is astonishing and truly unbelievable. Therefore, I would advocate for telling authentic stories about the extraordinary women who have operated in that realm.”
Industry Debate Swirls Around Bond’s Future and Potential Female Lead
Speculation regarding a woman assuming the iconic role has intensified recently. This perennial topic gained renewed momentum following the significant announcement that long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson ceded some creative control of the character’s destiny to Amazon MGM Studios in a substantial $1 billion deal.
While Amazon acquired the Bond intellectual property through its $8.5 billion purchase of MGM in 2022, Broccoli and Wilson previously retained final authority over key decisions, including casting choices. This new agreement marks a shift in this dynamic.
Subsequently, Jennifer Salke’s departure as head of Amazon MGM Studios sparked further industry discussion. Numerous insiders suggested that disagreements with Broccoli concerning the future direction of Bond potentially contributed to Prime Video chief Mike Hopkins’ waning confidence in Salke.
Producers Maintain Bond’s Male Identity, Advocate for New Female Characters
Reports indicate that Broccoli resisted a proposition from Salke to cast a woman as 007. Prior to the expanded partnership with Amazon, Broccoli publicly affirmed that Bond “is male,” adding, “I firmly believe we should be developing original female characters – compelling and strong female characters.”
Gemma Arterton and Daniel Craig Echo Similar Sentiments
Gemma Arterton, who portrayed Bond girl and British operative Strawberry Fields in the 2008 film “Quantum of Solace” opposite Daniel Craig, 57, has also voiced opposition to a gender-swapped Bond.
“Isn’t the idea of a female James Bond similar to suggesting a man play Mary Poppins?” she questioned in a December interview with the UK’s Times. “There’s discussion about it, but I suspect many would find it too unconventional.”
“Sometimes, it’s essential to respect established tradition,” she concluded.
Daniel Craig has also publicly stated his reservations about a potential “Jane Bond” character.
“Why should a woman undertake the role of James Bond when there should be a role equally compelling as James Bond, specifically crafted for a woman?” he inquired in a 2021 Radio Times interview.
Search for New 007 Continues
To date, no successor has been officially announced to inherit the 007 mantle from Craig, following his final portrayal of Bond in the 2021 film “No Time To Die.” The future casting decisions for the iconic role remain a subject of intense interest and speculation within the entertainment industry and among fans worldwide.
