Security Assurances Ahead of Grand National Amid Public Safety Focus

A senior police officer overseeing security for this year’s Grand National has affirmed that there is no intelligence suggesting the prestigious horse race will be disrupted by animal rights protests. Concerns arose after last year’s Randox Grand National experienced significant disruption when Animal Rising demonstrators invaded the track, causing a 14-minute delay to the main event. However, the 2024 event proceeded without incident, following a public statement from the group indicating they would not repeat their protest actions. Organizers and law enforcement are prioritizing public safety for the anticipated influx of attendees.

Comprehensive Security Measures in Place for Aintree Festival

Police Planning and Proactive Measures

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton of Merseyside Police informed the ECHO, stating, “We have no direct evidence to indicate the races will be subject to disruption this year.” He elaborated on the extensive preparations: “Events like this require months of advance planning. We are deploying a diverse range of resources, both uniformed and plain clothes officers, throughout the day. Our objective is to prevent, deter, and respond effectively. We have designated protest areas to which any demonstrators will be directed.”

Festival Anticipation and Public Safety

The renowned three-day festival, scheduled from Thursday, April 3rd, to Saturday, April 5th, is expected to attract over 150,000 spectators to Aintree and engage a global television audience estimated at 800 million viewers. Merseyside Police has emphasized that public safety is their foremost priority, and comprehensive preparations are in place to ensure a secure and enjoyable event for all attendees.

Ensuring a Safe and Memorable Grand National Experience

Multi-Agency Collaboration and Contingency Planning

Chief Inspector Chatterton detailed the robust safety strategy developed in collaboration with event organizers, The Jockey Club, and Aintree Racecourse: “Our planning has involved all relevant agencies, alongside The Jockey Club and Aintree Racecourse. We have established contingency plans to address both anticipated and unforeseen risks. Our response will be coordinated and proportionate, aiming to ensure a memorable and positive day for everyone.”

Welcoming Visitors and Showcasing Merseyside

“As in previous years, we anticipate a large number of visitors to the region for this racing festival, which presents a valuable opportunity to highlight the many positive aspects of Merseyside.”

Advice for Racegoers: Plan Ahead and Stay Secure

“As with all large-scale events, we conduct thorough planning with all partner organizations beforehand to ensure all attendees have an enjoyable, safe, and memorable experience for the right reasons,” Chief Inspector Chatterton advised. He urged attendees to, “plan effectively and in advance. Arrive early to allow sufficient time for security checks, and familiarize yourself with the event schedules.”

Enhanced Security Operations and Zero Tolerance for Crime

Personal Security and Vigilance

Chief Inspector Chatterton also provided guidance on personal safety within the racecourse: “While inside, please be vigilant regarding your own safety and the safety of those around you and your belongings. Avoid displaying large sums of cash, and keep mobile phones and other valuables secure and close to you. Refrain from using easily accessible back pockets or leaving handbags unfastened. Look out for one another.”

Project Servator Deployment

The police force has also confirmed the deployment of Project Servator officers at the Grand National event. These specialist officers are trained in disrupting a range of criminal activities, including terrorism. They are skilled in identifying individuals displaying behaviors that may indicate criminal intent or preparation.

āĻ•āĻ ā§‹āĻ° Warning Against Anti-Social and Criminal Behavior

Chatterton issued a firm warning: “Anti-social behavior, hate crimes, disorder, and any other criminal activity will not be tolerated and will be addressed robustly.” He encouraged public cooperation: “If you observe anyone acting suspiciously or committing a crime, please speak to a patrolling officer or contact us directly.”

Positive Public Engagement and Officer Readiness

Racegoers Support Security Measures

“Everyone attending the races wants to be there and is supportive of the police and event security operation because they want to enjoy the event and return home satisfied. They readily approach us and communicate with us,” noted Chief Inspector Chatterton.

Experienced Policing for Major Events

“There is always a degree of pressure, but Merseyside, despite being a geographically compact police force, is accustomed to managing numerous high-profile events, of which the Grand National is one. It is the largest horse racing event of the year, and we manage it annually. While the pressure is acknowledged, all officers are prepared and committed to ensuring a safe and successful event.”
