Dave Coulier Welcomes Grandchild During Cancer Journey

Dave Coulier, celebrated Full House personality, has shared joyous news amid his ongoing struggle with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The actor recently disclosed that he became a grandfather, finding a beacon of positivity during a challenging period.

Joyful Grandfatherhood

The 65-year-old comedian revealed in a recent interview that his son and daughter-in-law, Alex, welcomed their firstborn, a son, on March 27.

“We are incredibly thrilled,” Coulier expressed. “My son and his wife reside in California, and we anticipate frequent trips to visit our new grandson.”

Maintaining Positivity Amidst Health Challenges

Known for his iconic role as Joey Gladstone, Coulier emphasized the uplifting influence of his grandson on his outlook. He credited his grandchild with bolstering his optimistic approach to life amid his cancer diagnosis.

“I perceive this situation with positivity, particularly as I have the platform to inspire others,” he explained. “Negativity is not inspiring. Conversely, a positive mindset can be transformative.”

Diagnosis and Treatment

In November, Coulier announced his diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer, describing the experience as “quite overwhelming.”

Spouse’s Perspective on Coulier’s Resilience

Coulier’s spouse, Melissa Bring, revealed that her husband had expressed his readiness for potential outcomes following his fifth chemotherapy session.

“Those discussions were undeniably difficult,” she acknowledged.

Earlier in the year, speaking to a local Detroit news reporter, Bring mentioned that Coulier experiences “genuinely tough days.”

“As chemotherapy accumulates, it intensifies and becomes more challenging,” she admitted during the January interview.

Despite the arduous fight, she affirmed, “He possesses such a positive attitude, which is essential in confronting this illness effectively.”

She further detailed their efforts to maintain spirits, saying, “Each morning, if he feels well enough, we choose a song and have a small dance party with our dogs, because celebrating moments of well-being is important.”

Bring emphasized the widespread support for Coulier, noting he derives strength from past adversities. “It’s innate in him. He has faced considerable loss related to cancer,” she stated, referencing the passing of his mother, sister, and niece due to the disease.

Sharing News with Full House Family

Coulier previously shared that he informed his Full House co-stars about his diagnosis through a group text message.

The group chat includes series creator Jeff Franklin and co-stars John Stamos, Lori Loughlin, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Barber, and Scott Weinger.

Coulier, who played the beloved Uncle Joey from 1987 to 1995 and reprised the role in the Netflix sequel Fuller House (2016-2020), explained his proactive approach.

The Michigan native indicated, “I didn’t want them to hear it secondhand, so I sent a text message.”

“The response was an outpouring of support, with everyone offering to be there for me,” he recounted.

Strong Bonds and Shared Experiences

Coulier, whose diverse career includes roles on shows like Robot Chicken, How I Met Your Mother, and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, reflected on the close-knit relationship with his Full House colleagues. “The affection we share is truly overwhelming,” he said.

“We have supported each other for many years, which is quite remarkable.”

Coulier highlighted the enduring bonds, particularly poignant following the passing of Bob Saget in January 2022.

“I believe we value not only our time together but also our individual lives,” he stated. “We cherish the positive moments we’ve shared. This positivity extends to others, creating a ripple effect.”

He concluded, “Negativity is seldom present when I am with this group. It’s mostly filled with laughter and optimism, and we deeply appreciate what we have and the people around us.”

Fast-Paced Journey

Coulier revealed his cancer diagnosis followed an upper respiratory infection.

“It transitioned rapidly from a minor head cold to a cancer diagnosis, which was very overwhelming,” Coulier stated. “This journey has been an incredibly rapid and intense experience.”

Family History with Cancer

Coulier mentioned a family history of cancer, having lost his mother, sister, and niece to breast cancer.

His older sister Karen is also currently undergoing cancer treatment.

“Witnessing the strength of the women in my family, I thought, ‘If I can be just a fraction as strong as they were, I will be alright,'” he affirmed.
